Mario Kart 8 brings antigravity to the world of racing! In this game, you can race up vertical walls and across ceilings, introducing true three-dimensional course design!
You’ll also be able to enjoy some familiar features from more recent titles, such as aerial and submarine racing from Mario Kart 7, as well as the bikes from Mario Kart Wii.
Of course, the game also includes global multiplayer and Miiverse integration, letting you share the fun with everyone!

Looks like there are bundles/ promotions to be had over your side of the pond too.
Glad these companies are finally realising how to grease the wheels!

Nintendo has announced a Mario Kart 8 Wii U Deluxe bundle for North America. Featuring a 32GB Wii U, a copy of Mario Kart 8, a red racing wheel, and a Wii Remote Plus, the package will be available on May 30 for a cost of $330.

Additionally, anyone who registers a copy of Mario Kart 8 on Club Nintendo before July 31, 2014 can redeem one free Wii U game from a selection of four. Nintendo is offering a digital copy of Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. U, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, or Wii Party U to Mario Kart 8 owners.

It's funny to read constant negative press about the Wii U and that Nintendo might even shelve it completely in the not too distant future.
But this has to be one of my most anticipated titles of the year regardless of the console.
Failing system or not, this is going to be a world of fun.

Mario Kart 8 (http://www.ign.com/games/mario-kart-8/wii-u-122262) is the best kart racing game Nintendo has made in a long time. It strikes a careful balance between refining old ideas while introducing fresh new ones. Admittedly, its gorgeous graphics and jazzy orchestrated soundtrack bolster its presentation, but you’re getting a lot more than just looks with this one – although I spent an awful lot of time gawking at the details in slow-motion, the fast and furious pace of racing with friends both locally and online is what really kept me coming back.

Even though it was a day one preorder for me, I've arranged that it will be a present from my boys for my birthday.
So I won't be opening it until mid June, by which time Nate will have opened all the mirror tracks and all the power ups...grrrrr!

I still can't believe that Mario Kart Wii (highest grossing racing game of all time) will have no more online by next week.
As I mentioned in another thread, I can see the logic in shutting down servers.
But so many games these days are all about the multiplayer.
Most of us love to take a walk down memory lane with games from the past, but what about all these games that have given us as MPs so many shared memories together.
To think we will never be able to show our kids what we used to enjoy online from this moment in time, is a shame (unless they bring out future versions, who knows?)

If we're talking a 'family system' then the Wii U is perfect. (IMO)
My kids have never once been interested in playing on the PS4, they always want to play on the Wii U. I love it for that reason alone.

Okay, thought I would give some more detailed first impressions. I spent about 6 hours playing last night and did not turn it off until 1:00 am and had a hard time doing so even at that point. I'm totally in love with this game so far.

First off, the game is absolutely beautiful. When I was a kid playing the first Mario Kart on the SNES I never dreamed it would ever look this good. There will obviously be better looking game from a realism standpoint on the other systems, but when it comes to making the iconic art style of Mario games look better, I'm not sure how they can improve from this. The frame rate is silky smooth, I noticed zero pop-ins, the textures are crisp, the animations are fluid, and the levels are insanely detailed down to little things like birds flying off the track as you approach to skid marks from your tires staying on the track for the duration of the race. This is without a doubt the best looking Nintendo game in history, and IMO one of the most visually pleasing games of all time.

Similarly the sound, as to be expected, is spot on. The soundtrack is full of classically catchy Nintendo magic, the effects are many and detailed, and the even though each character doesn't have a ton of vocalizations they are none the less perfect for what you want in a Mario Kart game.

The gameplay is the best I have experienced in any kart racer ever, Mario or not. There is a respectably deep unlock system for kart parts. You can mix and match the body, wheels, and the gliding device to get the stats that are right for you, and I like the fact that although the character you pick still effects your weight a bit all characters have access to all parts, so you are not stuck picking a particular character class to get those vehicles. The gameplay itself is slightly faster than prior games, from the general speed to how quickly you get picked back up and put on the track if you fall off. It seems to me that although the items do still obviously play a large part, they wanted this game to be a little bit more about the actual racing from things like picking up coins along the track to increase your speed down to things like the red shell not being nearly as relentless as before and not following you as far. All the slight tweaks and adding of prior game's features makes this feel to me like the most nuanced, balanced, and completely realized Mario Kart yet from a gameplay perspective. On 50 cc the game was easy for me but enough of a challenge for my kids where they could do well but not feel like it was a pushover, but on 150 cc the AI is relentless but not cheap, and is a challenge even for an MK vet like myself, which is a very good thing, and I'm sure Mirror class is going to be even harder. I can't wait to spend a lot of time unlocking everything, getting all golds, and then spending a lot of time online. I loved ever second of it, even when I wasn't doing well.

The tracks. My God, the tracks. These are the best tracks IMO even in a kart game. The new tracks are insanely detailed and incredibly creative, and the remakes of prior tracks are equally enjoyable and have enough new things added or changed to make them feel fresh. This is in part to the addition of the anti-gravity sections of track in this game, and I can't rave enough about how much this new feature makes the tracks more dynamic. On some tracks you will go from being on wheels, using a propeller to go underwater, coming out of the water to twist upside down in anti-gravity, and then jump off a ramp and deploy your gliding part to fly across a huge gap. There is so much going on. Even the early tracks have more twists and turns and things thrown at you than prior games. This is one game I would not only welcome, but eagerly purchase, new DLC if it means new tracks as amazing as these. I don't even mind the lack of a track editor. I can't imagine a tool set that would allow the average player to create tracks like these.

I can't think of a single thing to complain about yet. I have not gone online and I understand the invite system is archaic and that is a shame, and I also understand battle mode isn't as good as before, but I never spend much time in that mode any way. Still I can imagine these are things that once I experience them will keep me from saying this game is perfect, but I am positive they are nowhere near enough reason to pass on an otherwise remarkably well made game.

I'm enthralled by this game. I know I haven't spent a lot of time with it yet, but based on my limited play time, and my extensive time with 5 out of the 7 prior Mario Kart games, I already feel comfortable saying this is the best Mario Kart game yet. If you were never a fan of Mario Kart games before, this game isn't going to change your mind. But if you were ever a fan, this is IMO the most fully realized, most detailed, most deep, and most fun Mario Kart game yet, and although this could be the newness of it talking, I think it is destined to be one of my favorite games of all time. There was a point last night where I realized I had been smiling in pure glee for hours. I can't remember the last time a game made me do that, and I can't wait to play more.

Lack of sleep starting to catch up with me, but totally worth it. Finished getting gold on all the 150 cc cups last night and unlocked Mirror Mode. Played through 5 of the mirror versions and got gold on each of them. Once I get gold on the final three I'm going to concentrate on getting a least a one star rating on each circuit. Thankfully if you get a star rating on the higher cc classes it carries down to the lower classes and I already got star ratings on 3 of the 5 mirror classes already. Then I will try to beat the ghost times and go online.

I'm so addicted to this game. I can't remember the last time I obsessed this much about a game. Now it's time for a huge cup of coffee.

I have about 16 tracks I still need to beat the time trial ghost times to unlock the gold wheels, and then I will hop online to earn coins quicker towards getting the 10,000 needed for the gold glider. Then I will finally have unlocked everything except some stamps I will go back and get as my leisure. Not sure if I will take the time to go back and try to get a three star rating on all cups since on 150cc and Mirror you are often left at the mercy of the items.

I've still got 8 more time trials to beat, but I decided to try the online "for just a race or two" before going to bed. An hour and a half later I finally called it a night after getting first place in every race except three where I got nailed by blue shells late in the race. I was making high ranking players rage quit left and right. It was glorious.

I'm still really sick and was doped up on medicine, so I was pleasantly surprised I did so well. Now that I've gone online it's time to ask, "who wants some?" :car: :gamer:

I've had two chances to play this game, and I have to say my first impressions are that it is just first class outstandingly good fun gameplay, with the most glorious plethora of colour and awesomeness, mixed with audio vibrancy that would make a Disney film feel like a Tim Burton horror in comparison.

First I tried local 3 player Grand Prix, and the screen was tough to see divided into four.
The boys struggle compared to the last Mario Kart because there is just so much happening all over the screen.

Last night I hit the 50cc single player and it is just superb.
The racing is a match to the last MK, with nice subtle additions as you soon discover.
The tracks are all so well made it is mind boggling. Just artistically perfect.

I was acing all the cups until DK Island and had a clear lead in the last.
The finish was in sight and nobody behind, I hear the Blue shell approach...just metres to go it strikes, taking me down.
All of a sudden the bitch himself, Donkey Kong, races past and steals the win.
I put the controller down, laugh to myself at the brilliance of it all and mutter the words " it is fuckin' on Donkey Kong "...

I disagree with others. This IS ONE game to buy a console for.
I bought the PS4 so I could play BF4 and look how that turned out.

I have to say 'Mount Wario' in the Star Cup has to be my new favourite track.
It has to be a direct homage to SSX Tricky, from the heli drop to the top-to-bottom race stages finishing up with style in front of the crowd is pure genius.

Some of the tracks leave me wanting more, but on the whole the new ones are original and fun and the classics have been beautifully remastered.

I have been primarily using the pro controller or using the gamepad with the analog sticks instead of motion controls. I was very proficient with the motion control steering wheel in Mario Kart Wii but I decided to focus on using analog sticks so I can play the game off-screen on the gamepad. I still use the motion controls when Draven and Ryker are using the pro controller and gamepad, and personally after getting used to using the sticks again I have to say they are a bit more responsive and precise.

I am steering wheel and Wiimote all the way.
I have read that the pro controller gives best results, but that just ain't racing in my book.

As I mentioned Tweety, drift is King! Throw your ass into those corners and get blue sparks and if room yellow.
Even the slightest little boost could mean a win or getting away from a shell.

I did try the gamepad (motion control) for one race and my right hand cramped up in minutes.
Not a natural feel in my opinion.

I love the Wii U Pro controller but I can't see myself using it for this game. The wheel was a blast on the Wii when you would jerk it upwards on jumps, humps and ledges.

This was part of the reason I used it on Mario Kart Wii. I always raced on a motorcycle so it was cool to lift up not only to jump off of stuff to get the boost when landing but also to pop a wheelie on the bike to get a speed boost on straightaways.

However, they have removed the wheelie speed boost feature for the bikes in this game so that is no longer a factor, and I could be wrong but I don't think jerking up on the remote or gamepad triggers the jump anymore. Even if it does, I find it more precise just to hit a button to jump because sometimes in Mario Kart Wii when I would jerk up to jump it would throw me off the line I was going for and I would end up going off to the side a bit when I landed.

Yes, the wheel is fun, but the pro controller is more precise and analog sticks/d-pad controls are the original control method for MK games and IMO still the best. Plus, I plan on getting Draven a 2DS for his birthday, and I want to be able to play Mario Kart 7 on it without having to make the adjustment back from motion controls to sticks.

If you decide you want to stick with motion controls, I highly suggest getting the plastic wheel to stick the remote in. It is much easier to hold, not as heavy, and more immersive.

I think Borlaxx described it best when he said " I couldn't imagine Mario Kart being like this when I was playing Super Mario Kart on the SNES" Spot on Borlaxx and the same goes for your review. It's amazingly fun. I played local multiplayer with the kids. My daughter was on the GamePad because she doesn't like motion controls. My son was on the Wii Remote and I was on the Wii U Controller Pro. My daughter doesn't really have a taste for video games but she said "this is awesome!" and "this is fun!" a few times. My only niggle is that there is no mini map on the screen and this is the same with single player. I can see that we'll be playing on summer vacation.

I'm going to get a third Wii U. I gave the launch Wii U to the kids for their house at mom's and I had bought another one for my house. I want another one because I'm getting rid of cable and going with Netflix. I'm going to use the new one mainly as a second set top box and gaming console. Due to my budget I was looking at the refurbished units for 200 from Nintendo. You can look around the internet for an idea of what condition that they are in but they are basically new with no scratches on the console or GamePad from everything that I have read. I could be wrong but I believe they are mostly launch consoles. They come with a 1 year guarantee, Nintendoland is included and you get the digital promotion as well. You cannot register it for Club Nintendo Points unfortunately.

My brother (El Capatan) will be joining the fun and for free at that!

I preordered through Nintendo, and their chosen courier messed up and delayed the delivery.
Nintendo subsequently honoured this 24 delay with a free download code for the game so nobody would feel left out on release day.
It didn't bother me as I wasn't opening the game for two weeks as I was giving to myself as a present from my boys.

As a result, my brother get MK8 plus one of eight games for free...bargain!

Still loving this game, but wish a few things were different.

On local multiplayer, it is such a shame that when I play with my two boys we all have to squint at a quarter of the screen. It would be so much easier if one of us could utilise the gamepad screen and the other two have half a screen each.
Surely that wouldn't be hard to implement.

My other big gripe is the vengeful wrath of the evil bastard Mario Kart AI.
No matter how flawlessly you nail those first few laps, you can almost guarantee that the slightest slip up and zoom, zoom, zoom, you're in 8th before you knew what hit you. At it always seems to happen on the fourth race when the gold cup is within reach.

One bonus is that I managed to counter a blue shell with a speaker blast earlier. Very satisfying.

Shame no other MPs were around for the tournament this weekend.
Southtown and I had a ball. Next time.

That was my blue shell that you countered! My son was sitting next to me and I was like "check this out, gonna nail this fool with my blue shell" my son was like dad, your friend just countered it with his speaker! Damn you stains!!! lol

Sorry I was out of town and missed it. May be going back to the beach this weekend, but if not I will try to join you all and set up a tournament.

I would recommend leaving the tournament open instead of closed Borlaxx

The reason why I think it should be open is if there is an MP that shows up and there is no one in the tournament than you are just waiting there by yourself. I did this over the weekend but I jumped over to another couple public tournaments for a couple of races,. After waiting for about 30-40 minutes for people to show I logged off. I set it as a tournament over a day for 12 hours. I would suggest to create a tourney let's say thurs-sunday and leave it as such and repeating itself every week and you don't have to go in there each and every time. Hopefully by leaving it open and people are searching then we may be able to fill the lobby more. I would hope that it's easer to find for randoms because at the top of the list I saw Nintendo Life GP and I hope we don't end up at the bottom of the pile.

This game is going to be popular over the summer of 2014. This is the time to start recruiting new members over on the mario kart boards.

So I got Mario Kart 8 last night and I went through 4 of the Cups on 50cc. (trying to get my grove back). This might be one of the best Mario Karts Ive ever played. Call me crazy but I LOVED Double Dash.

However this is pure amazing Mario Kart. Its quite obvious they took a short cut with the characters as pretty much all unlockable characters are basically the same. But the visuals are great. The tracks are a blast to play. The remakes of the older tracks are pretty awesome. I have not gotten into any online yet. The ability to counter the blue shell (which I did twice yesterday) is a great addition weapon wise. The whole coin collecting to unlock stuff is neat.

Overall Im loving it. I cant wait to get some races in with the peeps.

Thanks for the games last night HC...good times.
Once you get past the obvious flaws in matchmaking and the limited messaging options, it still has to be one of the funniest racers out there.
Teeth gnashing/ fist clenching mayhem ensues with maniacal cackling as you manage to catch out another player with a well timed banana or shell.

Be great if some more MPs jumped in on the action.

It was a great time. Haven't played MK since the N64, so I'm a bit rusty. I can't believe I've been running races picking random drivers and vehicle setups without knowing they affected stats. I think I've finally found a setup to match my style.

What do the stars do and how do you get them? One more cup to redo and claim my 3rd star on 50cc, then moving up to 100.

Not 100% sure, but I think:
4 race wins = 3 stars
3 race wins and a second place = 2 stars
1 GP win (but not 1st in each race) = 1 star

Get 3 stars in every cup in every cc and you unlock mirror tracks.

I am finding this harder to achieve than the previous installment.
The little so and so's get me every time in the 4th race!

The stars are solely for bragging rights and are an indication of how well you did on the circuit. To get three stars you not only have to get first each time but also race well in general. If you go off the track, hit a wall, etc to many times it will decrease your star rank. You do not need to get stars in every cup to unlock mirror tracks, just I believe get a medal of any color in all the 150cc circuits (maybe the lower circuits too). I currently have three stars in all but a few circuits on each cc class, and have at least a single star in the others. It is really hard to get 3 stars on 150 and mirror as the computer is very good and if they screw you over with items in even one race out of the four you can kiss the 3 stars goodbye.
