What is it?

I need YT vids, articles and reviews before I agree to getting anything you're involved in.

Otherwise before I know it, I'm waking up with a stinking hangover, next to a Tiger, with new tatoos (on me not the Tiger!), and a broken backdoor...

... I'm not falling for Captain Boddingtons charms any more! Once bitten, twice vaccinated...

From what I've seen and read, with Overwatch Blizzard is trying to do for fps what World of Warcraft did for mmorpgs and bring it to wider acceptance. On the one hand, it looks a bit too casual for my taste. On the other hand, I've never played a Blizzard title I hated.

I played the beta for a while last night. Every match seemed to be an unorganized chaotic mess. I like what they are trying to do with the different classes, but after trying several different ones there were no standouts for me. The tanks didn't feel that much stronger than anyone else, and the healers don't seem to heal enough to make a significant difference.

The primary weapons are all different but most of them do very little damage, so the enemies feel like bullet sponges. So the game basically becomes a match of elite skills, and none of those I tried felt especially fun.

Overall I'm very disappointed.

I did enjoy what few games I did play, I do have to say like most games like this Comms with your team is a must as well as ensuring your group has a good build. One group I was in we had no comms and from the start it was an obvious chaotic mess and stayed that way until I joined another match where the team actually talked and chose classes that were "best" for the group. At first I played Mercy (healer) and started to rage since it was a cluster F$%^ having to keep people who wanted to do their own thing alive. When I got into the group that was communicating I played Reaper (Shotgun) and actually liked him a lot.

If anyone is on the fence with this game I would recommend playing it during the Open Beta time frame and hope there are MP's or other friends that want to play it as well.

Any input from MPeeps who have picked this up?

I did enjoy the small time I had with the beta, but not sure if I'm going to purchase or not. The quietness around here regarding this title is swaying me towards no.

It seems to be getting fantastic reviews from just about all professional reviewers I have seen: http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/overwatch

From what I have been reading additional game modes, maps and characters will be added for free with no paid DLC. The only mico-transactions are for the loot crates which only contain cosmetic items are not in any way a pay-to-win issue.

This looks like a game I would really enjoy. If I have some extra cash and finish some of the other games I have first I may pick this up at some point.

This game is one of my greatest disappointments, because despite not having very good graphics I absolutely LOVED the gameplay. It was fantastic. Unfortunately releasing during the long PSN outage doomed it to failure on the PS3.

I'm having a blast with this game so far...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKG8Yx6F7uc

- No campaign sucks but not a killer for me
- watch the Dev Video pertaining to upcoming patches and updates they want to implement. No definite answer on new characters being free but they say "we want to go that route"
- The micro transactions are cosmetic only (poses, skins, sprays, etc) and don't add any benefits to your game play like Borlaxx said above
- I'm really enjoying the game and enjoyed it more when I was grouped with friends. Had a group of me, my son, my nephew, and SuperKNZ and we were killing it.
- COMMS and group setup are very very very helpful to success
- During the character select it recommends character types (assault, builder, DPS, Meat Shield, etc) that are missing from the group
- I don't like that you can have multiples of the same character, though it can hurt your group but still a pain in the ass
- I really like that I don't have to choose (build) from abilities that enhance my character, it's straight forward

If anyone has any questions hit me up

The more I read about this game and watch videos the more I want it. Reminds me a big of Garden Warfare 2 -- accessible fun that doesn't take itself too seriously. The lack of modes for me are not an issue as I usually only play one or two modes in a FPS, but I can understand why some may not like it for that reason. But like I said above, I loved BRINK, and the modes in this game remind me of that game's mode. Plus with it being a Blizzard game you pretty much know new modes, characters, maps, etc will be added for free at a steady pace.

I may pick this up on the way home today. I may not have the absurd amount of content like a game like BO3 does, but it sounds like it has the one thing that game didn't have for me........fun, and I need a good alternative to COD when I want a faster paced game with shorter matches than BF.

Well not totally $35. It was at Gamestop and required trading in a game on a list to get it at that price, but since Yoshi's Woolie World which my mom got them was on that list and my kids played it all of once and it was just collecting dust I consider it $35.

I didn't get to play the game much last night, but I loved the little bit of time I did get to play. The video below is from my first match against AI enemies with player-controlled allies. Obviously I will not do this well against real people and I had no idea what I was doing, but man, what a blast! I played a couple more matches against AI and then was about to join all PvP matches when my internet crapped out (it is back up this morning) and since I was tired I called it a night.

I've only played this character and the support angel healer character (she is awesome) so I still have a ton of other characters to try, but I can tell this game is going to be a blast and working together as a team will be HUGE as it is obvious these characters were designed to work together is some genius ways and the opportunities for strategy are almost endless.

At first I was a little put off by the fact that you cannot sprint or aim down the site with all characters, but then I realized that is because those aspects are part of the character balance and strategy element of the gameplay, and everything feels smooth as silk. I obviously need more time with the game, but my first impression is this game is going to be a blast, and I can't wait to play some more.

Sadly no, because I think those are only for whoever gets the "play of the match" video at the end, of which I didn't get any. There are a lot of things I need to look into about this game, like how to do emotes during games and how to send text messages between games. Going to look at some guides today.

As long as Blizzard continues to support this game like they said they would with regularly added FREE content like new heroes, maps, and game modes I can see this being a game I play for a long time.

That would explain why I couldn't hear it, as I had the chat volume on my headset all the way down but obviously it was picking it up in the game. Forgot to turn it back up when playing after last turning it down due to an annoying person in BF4 on my squad.

Started playing in PvP matches, and I'm doing surprisingly well. This is the type of game that as long as you play your role and PTFO, win or lose, you feel like you've helped your team.

I'm loving this game so far. The gameplay is superb, the characters are all individually awesome, and as long as Blizzard supports this with additional free content I will keep playing it.

It's not going to replace games like BF and COD, but it isn't trying to do so. What it is trying to be is something different, and IMO it accomplishes that goal tremendously.

I'm getting a sore throat so didn't want to Twitch tonight, but did upload a couple of vids of me looking like I know what I'm doing.

NICE! I find myself either playing support or defense characters most of the time since it seems most people are allergic to those roles and just want to play attack and tank characters. That is fine with me. I can still deal out the death while keeping my team alive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWTh_QB_sfY

I think Lucio may be my overall favorite character, at least for the moment. His ability to buff the speed of teammates is HUGE when rushing to capture an objective first and when trying to get back to to the action after being killed, and the fact that he can switch between speed buffing and healing on the fly is awesome.

Draven, my 10-year-old, really loves this game too. He prefers to play against bots instead of real people, but at least he can do that with actual player allies and not all bots and still level up.

I forgot to mention this, but has anyone picked up on the often hilarious dialogue between characters while waiting for a match to start? Example I heard a couple of days ago:

Reinhardt: "What is wrong with the classics? Do you not like Hasselhoff?!?"

I am probably the only person here playing Overwatch regularly, but they did an update last week that added in a bunch of Olympics themed items in loot boxes as well as a temporary mode called Lucio Ball which is a lot like Rocket League. They also added a bunch of balance patches that have made the gameplay even better.

Overwatch will be having a free demo weekend from September 9-12 on Playstation 4 and Xbox One. It will be the entire game with no restrictions and if you decide to buy the game after the demo weekend any progress you made will carry over.

I'm not holding my breath, but it would be cool to see some other PS4 MPs try the game out. I have a steady group that I play with most nights so if anyone tries it out chances are good I can get us into a full team of 6 people with mics so we can work as a team, and that is when the game really shines.

"Overwatch's Halloween update introduced an excellent witch skin for Mercy. Sadly, it doesn't cause her to use a new voice line that's present in the new Brawl mode. Some 490-plus posts later, players petitioning for its inclusion have received a simple answer: "OK."

Since the update's release earlier this week, players have been calling for Mercy's Ultimate voice line--"Heroes never die"--to be replaced when using the skin. In its place, they want her to say what she does in the Junkenstein Brawl mode: "My servants never die."

Many of these requests came in a lengthy thread on the Overwatch forums, which game director Jeff Kaplan showed up in briefly today. "Ok," he responded. "ETA mid-Nov."

That was his entire message, which somehow makes this good news even better.

It's unclear right now if the change will be made in mid-November on all platforms; updates on consoles typically trail behind those on PC. We don't yet know what other changes are on the way, though a "dramatic" adjustment for Symmetra is in the works."

Had my first go on Overwatch today; seems like fun.
Bit confusing with all of the different characters but I'll keep trying.

Six new Overwatch maps in development, three “likely” this year – Kaplan

“We also have a few other experiments going on,” says game director.

Overwatch is “likely” to get three new maps by the end of this year. Weeee!

The news comes from game director and all-round good egg Jeff Kaplan, telling fans three of those maps are far into development.

“We currently have 3 maps in development, all past the initial playtesting phase that are “standard” maps (QP/Comp). While something could always change, all 3 of those are looking likely for a release this year,” he said.

Our man Lewis Burnell reckons it’s past time for new Overwatch maps, and has a few suggestions of where Blizzard could go with them.

Interestingly, Kaplan also revealed there’s another three maps in development, too.

“We also have 3 non-standard maps in development (these won’t go in QP/Comp). We also have a few other experiments going on.

“Hopefully this will satisfy some of what you’re looking for. We want to play on these maps as badly as you guys do. We’ll work as fast as we can!”

This is such a great game... anyone play it here? It takes a while to learn all the nuances of each character and how to counter them, but once you figure it out it's so much fun! The fact that it's all free DLC and will be supported for a long time makes it better. Though, I've never played in competitive mode, and I've heard that can be toxic at times so that might chase some away.

I started playing it and really had fun, but unfortunately I felt the community was a bit to toxic for me so I stopped playing. I can say, if you get into a group of friends who want to have fun this can definitely be the game for some good times. It tends to frustrate me when you get the "wanna-be-MLG" F#$%er jumping into public lobbies and their only concern is how you're playing vice how their playing.

I played Overwatch a fair bit around the time I joined MP. Had a lot of fun although I wasn't overwhelmingly good. Depends a bit on how bad your opponent team is... ;-)

I believe with a group of friends on mic, this is an even funnier game.

I've dabbled and wouldn't mind doing more but "so many games - so little time". My boys love it but they always go into private parties so avoid the trash-talkers.

Overwatch (http://ca.ign.com/games/overwatch) game director Jeff Kaplan is ready to tackle what he describes as "the rising tide of toxicity or bad behavior in the game" with some much-needed improvements to reporting systems, as well as Blizzard's general strategy around maintaining a positive community.
In a developer update and forum post (https://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20758737651#post-16), Kaplan detailed some of the short, medium, and long term plans the Overwatch team has for combating in-game toxicity (such as adding the report function to console), as well as why it's such a huge priority.

Short term goals, according to Kaplan, include "re-evaluating every punishment," launching an email notification system that will let players know when action has been taken against someone they reported, and banning accounts guilty of boosting in Season 5. The team is currently in the process of converting silences into suspensions in the hope of eventually phasing silences out as a punishment altogether in favor of suspensions (which will be extended) and bans.

Punishment for bad behavior in-game is about to get a lot more severe, according to the medium term goals Kaplan has laid out. Repeat offenders in Competitive could be banned from playing Competitive ever again if they've been banned from enough seasons. Not only will they be banned more often for toxicity — especially abusive players will also "strike out" much sooner. Players who try to boost or throw games will also face harsh punishment thanks to a series of systems designed to detect behaviors related to Skill Rating manipulation.

Kaplan's plan for battling toxicity in the Overwatch community isn't focused solely on punishing bad players, though — he also wants to prioritize rewarding people for playing nice.

"It really bums us out to spend so much time punishing people for being bad sports," Kaplan writes on the official Overwatch forum (https://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20758737651#post-16). "We like making cool, fun game systems — that's what we do for a living."
The post doesn't outline any details regarding how the Overwatch team will "encourage positive behavior and reward good players," but Kaplan promises more updates soon.
“Overwatch should be an inclusive game space," Kaplan states. "It’s an inclusive aspirational universe and the gameplay experience should match what Overwatch is trying to achieve."

According to Kaplan, toxicity in the Overwatch community does more than hurt the experience of players game to game, but also the progress of Overwatch's actual development.

"We love creating these cool content and features for you guys — we want to make new maps, we want to make new heroes, we want to make animated shorts. That’s where our passion is," Kaplan explains. "But we’ve been put into this weird position where we’re spending a tremendous amount of time and resources punishing people and trying to make people behave better. I wish we could take the time we put into putting reporting on console and have put that towards a match history system or a replay system instead. It was the exact same people that had to work on both who got rerouted to work on the other."
In the end, Kaplan says that the Overwatch team accepts responsibility for improving the behavior of the Overwatch community, but hopes the community itself will step up and do their part.
"I’m not trying to lay a major guilt trip on everyone here, but I do think we need to take a step back and realize we’re all here to have fun," says Kaplan. "We want Overwatch to be a really great place and each of us can play a very important part in that."

Overwatch has another free weekend coming up, which is a good chance to check out Blizzard’s hugely popular shooter.

The free weekend has been announced on the Overwatch blog, and will begin at 11:00 a.m. PDT on Sep 22 (the free trial client won’t be available to download until then, unfortunately, so you can’t preload). Everything except competitive play will be unlocked, including the ability to earn loot boxes. It will run until September 25, ending at 11:59pm PT.

“Plus, if you decide to purchase Overwatch after test driving the game, you’ll get to keep any progress that you made during the weekend”, the post reads. “Just be sure to use the same Blizzard, Sony Entertainment, or Xbox Live account that you played on.”

Overwatch currently has a community of over thirty million players (and that was back in April, so the number is likely to have risen by now), so you’ll have plenty of people to play against.

If you see new players online over that weekend, remember to be nice.

I was going to say that neither of my boys had mentioned any bad behaviour in Overwatch, when I suddenly thought it is probably them being the bad guys!

Actually when I have watched them play, I've never noticed anything bad. But then I guess they mainly play for an hour each between 4 and 9pm, so probably before the worst people come online.

I play this game everyday. There isn’t one day I don’t come across an extremely toxic player or someone throwing a game in competitive. I’m just starting to believe people play competitive to not win these days.

Sorry to hear that. It must be so destroying for the developers to see their hard work turned into an arena for griefing people.

Dude it is annoying to hear some of the people on there, but then again that's been my experience in most online games.

Anyone done the Halloween event? I haven't yet, but remember last years was a boat load of fun
