THE GOLF CLUB 2 - Announcement & Dev Diary


It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to write one of these with any news about development, or what we’ve been up to. When we released The Golf Club, we never thought it would succeed as well as it has. Once we realized we had something special we wanted to keep working on it way past release, to make the ultimate golf game. The reason for the retrospectives over the last few months have to give you an insight into our thought process at the start of the project and how things progressed way beyond what we imagined, and timed so they’d lead nicely into the announcement today. I hope that from what you read in those, you understand where we wanted to take TGC and that we were being limited with the confines of the engine and the released version, which when people pay for a product, you can’t change too much.

Biggest gaming regret in recent memory...

"Ooh, do I get The Golf Club, it looks pretty cool but then again it's made by a little known dev who is unlikely to support it moving forward. Tell you what I'll play it safe and stick with Rory's PGA Tour, I know where I stand with EA golf games."

*Turns out The Golf Club is an 'out of the gate' success with huge support and loyal fan base, building a rich variety of course design.

*Rory was 'meh'. Played it once, now collects as much dust as Tiger Woods' lucky red Sunday shirt.

If "Rory" had allowed people to play every stroke of tournaments in a full career mode, I would have played that game until my thumbs fell off. But not giving people the option to play every hole was just stupid.

I know TGC has it's failings too, but they have supported it like crazy and been active with player feedback. My only decision for TGC2 will be Xbox or PC?

Sorry - slow pony and I realize this is way past due to comment on a post from 4 months ago, but Rory did have a setting you could change so that you played every stroke of a tournament.

Servers are pretty bad today. I'm willing to be a bit more forgiving to a small studio though. But they best get it fixed fast.

The servers were working properly late tonight, or most had gone to bed. Either way, I got a complete round in with no disconnects or any other issues at all and it was awesome.

This game is well worth the price if you enjoy sports in general and a must own if you love golf. The course creator alone is probably worth the price. This game is also a perfect example of a title that would be pure magic with cross-platform play between XBO & PS4.

It's a budget title with AAA quality and depth.

Servers seem a little better today although I'm guessing Friday will add new stress when the game goes live in the rest of the world. I've completed 5 rounds and I think this version "may" surpass the original in every way. I played well over 2000 rounds of TGC1 and the changes I'm seeing are all positive for TGC2. The putting is drastically different than the original and I'm struggling the most trying to find the correct speed.....But I agree [emoji817] retro, this is a must own if you love golf. It does so many things right and the course creator is phenomenal.

I'm really glad I purchased this game, just wish their servers weren't shit! I didn't lose connection for 2 matches, now I keep going offline every 10 mins! Will be interesting to see how bad it's going to be when they open it up to EU!

I'm surprised their servers are taking a shit so quickly. I don't recall these issues with TGC1. On a positive though, you are connecting directly to their servers and not through Sony. One of the advantages is they can adjust in real time. The other advantage is you don't have to have PS Plus to play online.....hence their servers crashing....EVERYONE who buys can go online

Played more today including a few rounds with Teach. What can I say, when it's working, it's pure gold. Once they get the server issues fixed I can only imagine the number of hours I'll be putting into this.

Also, that resume round feature after a disconnect is a life saver. As frustrating as the disconnects have been, it's been great to just jump right back in without missing a step.

I think they had way more marketing for this one. TGC1 launched with a very small player base on PC then came to console later. So it was a nice staggered entrance. Just hope they make some major adjustments over the next two days before Europe comes online.

Played three rounds yesterday. Great looking graphics, but I can't decide if I like the lack of a swing meter or not. On the one hand, if makes it more about feel and less about a perfect understanding of all the factors to make a perfect shot. However, I seem to be getting a very large variation in my swing -especially the downswing - which they usually call " very slow" no matter how fast I do it. This occasionally leads to random drives that come up 100 yards short. Gonna try a different controller.

The Golf Club 2 servers have been an issue since launch and the team from HB Studios have been working hard to get them stabilized. The official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/thegolfclubgame) has posted an update this evening, as they continue to optimize and address the issues. Also of note, they are adding 5,000 coins to all active accounts over the weekend.
The team at HB Studios has been working diligently to resolve the server issues that have been reported. We would like to thank you for your patience and are happy to say that we have optimized the servers reducing the disconnection issues.We have addressed an issue blocking some users from sometimes accessing Career or Societies. We will be continuing to monitor and optimize the server usage as we move forward.
Out of appreciation we will be adding 5000 coins to all active users accounts over the weekend, thanks again and we will see you on the course.

Hopefully I'll be able to play this tonight.

I bought and downloaded on Thursday. Couldn't even get through the lessons as it would keep coming up with an error code and I'd have to restart.

Last night something was off as it would take about a minute just to load the next menu screen.

As I understand it, the slow or fast feedback has more to do with how long you pause at the top of the swing. Too long and the downswing is considered slow. Not long enough and the swing is considered too fast. I'm still trying to figure it out completely but that's how it's been explained over on the TGC forums.

I haven't even looked at club selection yet, so I'm assuming mine are the standard. Since you routinely out-drive me, I'm assuming that you were using the player clubs. Will have to look at it today and play around.

Sadly you can't "invite" people to Societies. If it's set to private, they just have to search the name and send a request. Only the person who created it can accept/deny requests.

You can have your Society set to private, but when you create a season, you can have your events set to open so anyone can play them. That's probably the best option if you want to built up your Society with upgrades (which I have no idea what they do), as you can then set entrance fees for each event then select the percentage of fees go to the club and how much go to the event purse.

I originally set the Xbox Society as all private. Once the current event is done, I'm going to end the season and start a new one that will allow any player to play the event, but keep membership private.

From what I can tell you can use the cash to make the clubhouse nicer, establish longer seasons, and add prize pools. Eventually we can add stripper poles and llama pens (PS4 exclusive :ar15:).

I'll probably leave the membership open for the time being as I know Helmet had some buddies who he plays with so they can join. I can always kick guys if we don't recognize them.

One thing I noticed - I had set our initial tourney to run for 7 days. However, since it looked like everyone was gonna get their rounds done pretty fast, I went to add a second event but it wouldn't let me have overlapping events, so we have to wait for the second event "The MP Sandbagger Handicap Open"

I should set up identical tourney locations and names on the PS4 side and we can do a combined leaderboard here. Let me know what tees and pin locations you used so that it's all the same.

Only problem I have is that I screwed up and set our first tourney to run for 7 days, so won't have the second one set up to start until Saturday. Then I'm in Germany from Jul 9 to 21 so won't be able to set up any more after that.

Do you think you could add events to run through Jul 21 by this Sunday? I can then set up similar ones on the PS4 side to run even though I'm not here.

One thing I think you might want to do is go 3-4 days to complete tourneys instead of two. Two is a little tight to expect good turnout (we only have 4 guys who played the Inaugural on the PS4 side). If I were to recommend maybe have two a week - the first to go from Mon-Thr and the second to go Fri-Sun.

Right now it's trying to figure out a nice balance. Found with the 4 rounds it was a bit much. I think 3 days may be the sweet spot in terms of time. You don't want too much space between but you don't want people to get bogged down either.

I find rounds usually take 30 minutes, so really getting an hour of the game in over two seems okay, but I'll adjust to three if needed.

I plan on filling out the last 6 events once the first couple are done as I need more coins for the society before making new events in order to have a bonus purse for each event. I should be able to get a couple more added this weekend.

I screwed up the first even and forgot to change the tees. So it's on default. The other three are all set to the second tee position. Pins are all left to whatever the default is per round.

Here's the scores for our inaugural tournament - which took place at Yuma from the second tees and the default pin positions - so it should be comparable to the first Xbox tourney. Still one more day for people to join/play, will update if anything changes.

Retro - still would like to see these go out to 3-4 days long, but will try these two day-ers to start. You can edit tournaments as long as they haven't started yet. Also would love to see one of the upcoming tournaments be a handicap format so that we have some kind of shot of beating Helmethead. :assassin:

I am traveling to Germany from 9th to 21st, so there will probably be a gap after the 13th depending on if Retro adds some more XB1 tournaments before I leave.

Still would love to see some more golfers on the PS4 side - if anyone reads and wants to join just search for the society called Team MP and you will be able to join.

yeah - it's a little weird. You'll enter in start and end days, but then it seems to chop off the last day and make it end the day before.

I'm gonna adjust ours to run until the 16th when the handicap tourney will start on PS4.

HB Studios have been working hard to optimize the load on their servers for The Golf Club 2, in an effort to reduce transition times and delays. They have released their first patch for The Golf Club 2 (http://www.hb-studios.com/forum/index.php?topic=20077.0) for PC users. This will improve the experience with some client side optimizations they have completed. The update also includes the following details.


Society and Career stats updating with less delay from the server.
In-Game leaderboards updating with less delay from the server.
We have added the ability to donate to a society’s bank from your personal wallet.
We have added an active course filter to show all course with active rivals on them.
A setting has been added to turn off the ball label for ghosts and rivals.
Rebalanced AI for Career Mode.
Less time delay between turn based shots with rivals/friends.
Lighting adjustments

Xbox One and PlayStation 4 patches have been sent to Microsoft and Sony respectively, and shouldn’t be too far behind, barring any unforeseen issues.

Added checks to better determine whether users are cheating while playing their rounds. Users caught cheating will have their scorecards removed and other repercussions will be determined in the future.
Course Creator – “Move Hole” could become unresponsive over time.
Correct publishing messages are now being shown when a courses publish fails for a specific limitation.
Users with no HCP are displaying 36.4 in the Members list of a society this will now show no HCP when required.
Course regeneration times have been improved on console when using the Course Designer.
Wind ratings have been fixed for all events in society events to have all users playing with the same settings regardless of time of day.
Addressed a limitation preventing the full use of the withdraw function in Career Mode.
Resolved a limitation stopping some users from accessing their society events.
Ability to view all golfers profiles whether you’re friends or not has been addressed.
Addressed the loss of d-pad function on PS4 after using the touchpad.
UI: The User’s stroke count was increasing by 1 in the replay scorecard HUD after the user watches a replay and lets it cycle through a 2nd time.
The ball label of player 1 is no longer missing its distance to pin read-out.
Ball label colors of player 1 and player 2 have been corrected
Ball labels appear on active ball
Labels no longer remain on balls that are holed out.
Ball marker no longer follows the users ball in single player games off the drive
Placing objects in the course creator regeneration time has been improved.
Optimized memory used when creating a heavily object populated 18 hole course.
Ghosts are now being sorted properly when using the score filter.
Added a High Visibility HUD option to make white text easier to read for vision impaired users.
UI: Course Designer: Main Menu is displaying KB/M controls when the user is using Gamepad controls after leaving the Course Designer.
Improved the impact of DOF settings being applied in-game.
Added National Flags which can now be used as crests for emblems.
Potential improvement made for those experiencing hitching in their back swing on PC and Consoles.

I need to jump back into Seige. I quit when it became a game about rushing instead of strategy, constant TK'ing, etc. I'm also not a fan of the shortened time limit in ranked. Maybe things have changed.....

Sadly things have not changed that much, I don't see as much team killing as others have reported and the rushers soon realise their foolish ways against a squad of angry old men looking for that satisfying first kill.
It was mainly the comfort of you spooning my dying body that I miss! :becky:

I recently downloaded Americas Army Proving Grounds. It's free on PS4 and is similar to seige in concept. I'm going to hit it a try this weekend.....might be a good alternative if it's not as toxic as R6S
