It was a sad week for the British Military. As the iconic Harrier Jump Jet took its last flight, due to more defence cuts :(

That is sad news. I remember, as youngster, being enthralled by the Harrier Jump Jet. Just way too cool, IMO.

They were an amazing piece of engineering...the thrust to lift them is incredible.

I lived near RAF Wittering, which was one of the main bases in the UK for the Harrier.

I used to love watching them flying around, practicing their STOLs and VTOLs. Doing lowish level buzzes along our valley.

It is a sad day, and a politically lead mistake to get rid of these. :(

I'd also like to say a belated RIP to HMS Ark Royal, its a sad day when the flagship of the Royal Navy is decomissioned when she still has a few years left in her.

I hate to point out the blindingly obvious. But this country is going to shit. Big time.

Did our forefathers really lay their lives on the line, for us to inherit this tinpot excuse for a government.
Didn't someone once say defence is the first line of attack?

I know, lets sell our Armed Forces so we can rely on the French when all hell brakes loose :cuss:

If it all continues to hit the fan in the Middle East, who will we send, the bloody girl guides?

I feel the fuse has lit on the oil crisis and we are all sat on a big pile of tnt watching it spark towards us... :-s

*Edit. Sorry if this sounded like a bigoted rant. I mean no disrespect to our wonderful French neighbours. I am but ignorant 'Ros Beuf' as they say...

I see the Typhoon is costing some ridiculous amount of money that means we could have had a fleet of space shuttles and Raptors for less.

A sad day for our Town, RAF Cottesmore, which has sent Tornado fighters to all of the recent conflicts in the middle east and the former Yugoslavia, well the government have decided to save money and close the base, service personnel marched through the town on Friday, hundreds and hundreds of local people lined the streets cheering, clapping and flag waving!!! More wars more goverment cuts to our military!!!

Well, with all these cuts happening across the board. I may have spotted an opportunity.
If we all club together, I think we could purchase one of our old Destroyers for the 'Team MP HQ'.

I see there's talk of a, for want of a better term, U-Turn. They are currently looking at whether to keep the harriers and aircraft carriers in service, to which I say... BIT LATE YOU TITS!

Just watched the final journey of the mighty Arc on Discovery and she visited the city that built her which is also the same city that I am originally from, Newcastle Upon Tyne. It was the only place that she was open to the public throughout the journey and 10000 people visited her in just 2 days. I would have loved to have taken Liam but seeing the queues on the tv, I'm glad I wasn't standing there for hours on end with a 2 yo. I am a lucky guy as it is, as I managed a visit when I was a kid, and I can still remember the feeling I had then.

I could be wrong, but I thought the US was building a new stealth harrier? A cross if you will between the old harrier, its abilities and the stealth of a F-22 Raptor. I swear I heard that somewhere. If that is the case. Maybe they are about to receive the new Harrier. :-??

I'll have to do some research on that; try and remember where I heard that.

Here is what I found. Although I can't speak for your military and why they would decommission the Harrier. It's an awesome aircraft. I loved watching it at our airshows here in San Diego. I can only assume the decommission is because the jet is out of date and expensive to maintain or fly. Even with the upgraded flight controls and armaments. It has seen its days. Here is something to look forward to though.

Yeah, that's the new "JSF" Joint Strike Fighter. They are fitting it with VSTOL (vertical take off) but at the moment the engines are hot enough to melt aircraft carrier flight decks when they take off vertically! :))

HMS Ark Royal.

I know it is odd we can become attached to a ship. Tons of steel that are one or more city blocks long. You may spend a tour or two living on board. Doing daily maintenance to keep her operating, running, performing the mission. Each of her crew have different assignments, some like damage control, to keep her alive and afloat if torn up in battle. You develop life long friendships with those you served with on board. You often mature, get promoted, develop new professional skills while deployed on her. You get to know the ship well, can feel and sense when things are amiss. They become a living thing to some and it feels wrong-disrespectful that the ship is dismantled or sunk as target practice.

A friend of mine that served on the Oriskany is able to 'visit' his ship. It was sunk - even keel - to become a coral reef. He is learning to dive and will make his second trip down to the vessel.

Both ships that I sailed on during my enlistment were sunk after they were decommissioned. I wish some port in the US would have taken them, made them into a museum. Maybe use the ships power plant to supplement the city power grid. I would have liked to have been able to take my kids to see the ships I sailed on.

Three cheers for the HMS Ark Royal!

Matt

On the subject of jets.

I was reading this to my eldest as his bedtime book, and thought I would share.
It was designed by my wife nearly twenty years ago when she used to work in the big smoke.
DK make so many great books and now apps. The illustrations are really good.
She is always quick to remind me that she could have been loaded by now if I hadn't dragged her away from the City #-o

Sorry about the quality, I rushed it on my phone. Hopefully you get the picture.

Sorry. I should clarify. She designed the books at Dorling Kindersley. (eg layouts etc)
She is a very good artist though, but most of that skill got quashed once all design work went onto computers.

@Dadafett. Hope Kobbes talents take him far. He certainly paints a mean picture on CoD
I know a few artists, and it is a hard living (to make money/ not physically). They have to diversify a lot.

So Britain ordered 3 F-35Bs to replace our entire carrier based Harrier fleet.
They are just coming off the production line, only we've now decided we don't want them.
We still have to have them, just we may never use them!
