View Full Version : Questions Regarding Brink

Figured I would start a questions thread. Also going to start a forum for this game as it looks like the 360 version will have a lot of players. PS3......well..........

My question is this: does anyone know if I can play the SP in this game and level up with the PSN still down? I know you can level up in SP and then carry that into online whenever the PSN comes back up, but I am afraid I will not be able to play the game at all with the PSN down.

I combed the Spalsh Damage forums but couldn't find a dev responding to the PSN topic. To me that isn't a good sign.

From what I can gather is that you will gain XP in a personal file that will synch once you are online. You will basically be playing with bots on your team until you can connect. It may not be fun or successful but since they were making it so you can lone wolf with bots or go toe to toe with other players, it should all still work.

I think this is probably the case, but I want to make sure. I don't want to spend $60 on a game just to find out I can't play it at all or my ranking info doesn't get saved for when I eventually can get online when the PSN comes back up.

Answered this one myself: no.

Disappointing. I would get this game for sure if I could play split-screen with my brother.

Hey BDJ, good to hear from you. Hope to get some games with you soon. I couldn't figure that out either (still haven't really). I was able to join Jayno from the main XBOX friends menu (it said he was "joinable"). I haven't figured out yet if there is way to join from the in-game menus.

Has anyone figured out how to enter your clan tag?

I am going to read the booklet that came with this game. There is a lot to this game, and the booklet for this game, unlike pretty much every other FPS, actually teaches you things. What a concept. I may also watch the intro video. I skipped it last night and gave up the extra XP, but there are still a lot of things I don't really understand.

This game is a very hardcore FPS with tons of depth. Not at all for a casual FPS player.

No point in watching the vid, unless you really want 1000XP. It doesn't teach you anything that we haven't already learned from the pre-release vids that Retro, and others, have been posting. I think I may read the booklet myself.

I did my normal thing of popping the disc in and ignoring the manual, that was my first mistake. After awhile I began to read the manual and amazingly began to understand what was actually going on! Perhaps I should read the manual more often.

I think you have to start an XBOX Live party first, start a mission, and invite the party in. I did what Daylite did. I just joined in games where I saw it was joinable.

One of the devs talked about adding something for clan support but I don't think it's up yet. I don't think he meant ingame though. Most clans have been picking a color scheme and dressing appropriately...

Well, I have gone with blood red pants, a jacket with bloody bandages under it, and a full body tat and a scar over my eye. I am not sure that would be considered "dressing appropriately" 8-}

Thought I would post something about the invite system. This is XBOX specific, cuz I don't know how it would work on PS3 (once the PSN is back up).

The key seems to be using the XBOX Live party system. If you are in a Live Party you will see an in-game menu option to "invite XBOX Live Party" about 3/4 down the left side of the screen. Hit that button and then members of your party will get an invite. Last night it seemed to work really well on several occasions. I've also been able to join (on one other occasion) on a fellow MP just from the main XBOX friends menu.

I've been able to join by both methods too. The important thing to remember is to create a private or public match so others can join in freely. This also goes for the campaign.

This is something I don't quite understand, yet. If I create a Private match how are others going to be able to join? I still have a lot to learn about in this game.

Acutally, I find Brink a bit confusing in general. I'm never quite sure if I am playing with other people or just Bots. In the case of the Challenges there was an option to play "Solo", so that was pretty straightforward, but in at least one other instance I thought I was playing SP when in fact I was playing MP. Of course, I'm not the brightest bulb in the chain.

When you create a private match, just be sure to select "friends and invites only" or "anyone" (or something like that) and other people can join in just like they do in BC2 (from the friends or party menu). Sorry I couldn't join you guys last night. I kept getting a message saying I couldn't play on that server because my rank was too high. :-B So I went in and created another character. :p

One nice thing they did was make the name above people in the XBL party purple. IMO, they should have made other real people's names on your side another color other than white or purple so you can distinguish who is real.

One thing to note about character creation. When your in the customization screen you create a unique look for your character as both Resistance & Security. On the XBOX you tap the "Y" button (triangle on the PS3) on this screen and you will switch from one side to the other.

Some people were wondering why their character did not look like what they had created. But if your characters look was done under the resistance side and you find yourself playing on the security side you will just get a generic looking character. You need to customize for both security & resistance.

In the video they are creating their character as a member of the security force. If you look at the top right of the screen you will see the yellow "Y" button. When you press it you will switch to the resistance side. Your character will be stripped down and you can customize using the resistance looks.

[yt:1oljrvru]Wvz5gz26YgM[/yt:1oljrvru]

Now when the game places you on either side during a map, you will have a unique character that you created for either Security or Resistance.

I had to do the same thing. There is an option when creating a match to "open" it to any rank.

Generally the bots have short names like "Kelvin". If you see an actual first name, I'd take that to be a bot. Plus the score board shows a little bot symbol.

So, I've got two questions:

1) What is rank? Is it just related to level (i.e. rank 1, level 1-5, rank 2, levels 6-10, etc.), or is it something else?

2) Is it possible to unlock everything on a single character, or do you need more than one? That would definitely affect decisions on unlocking skills.

A Rank is a type of level grouping system in Brink. In order to prevent level 20 players with top-notch abilities from playing against level 1 players who are new or have started a new character, Splash Damage has instated the system of Ranks. Only players in a certain Rank can participate with or against each other, and if there are not enough players with that Rank searching for matches, the remaining slots are filled with bots. After a character has surpassed a certain level, their Rank is upgraded and they will play against a higher ranked group.

It is possible for a higher-ranked player to join the game of a lower-ranked player (i.e. they're both friends), but in this scenario the higher-rank player will lose access to his or her higher-ranked abilities.

The ranks are as follows:

Rank 1: Levels 1-4.
Rank 2: Levels 5-9. At this point, characters will be able to access class-specific abilities.
Rank 3: Levels 10-14.
Rank 4: Levels 15-19.
Rank 5: Level 20 characters only.

To my knowledge, you can unlock everything using a single character.

You can only go up to level 20 and there are 52 abilities. Since you only get 1 point per level, you will need to plan your skills or take the penalty for buying a skill back. I believe you get bumped back a level for buying back.

To unlock a couple new weapons and ALL the weapon attachments, you have to do the challenges. These things do not unlock just by leveling up.

Leveling up gives you one point per level to use on abilities, and like DInsdale said, there are only 20 levels and over 50 abilities, so you cannot unlock all abilities with a single character. If you don't like what you choose, you can reset and buy them back, but you loose a level as a penalty. My first character I making a balanced character, and then I am going to concentrate on a beast medic, engineer, etc. for other characters.

So if you sell all of your abilities, do you lose a level or a rank? I've seen these used interchangeably on other websites and they are not the same.

It says it in the instructions you lose XP, but I am pretty sure I saw a review saying you lose a level, not a rank, but could be wrong.

Hmm, thanks of this info. I wasn't aware that this was how it works (have I mentioned that I don't "do" instructions?). I didn't know where I was getting those credits from and was just buying abilities in sequence thinking that I would get all of them, eventually. Now I am going to go back and likely sell them and start from scratch giving more thought to my selections. I don't really mind getting knocked back a level. It doesn't seem very hard to level up. I typically will go up a level with about 1/2 of play.

I did the same thing (buying abilities in sequence). I sold all of my abilities and it only takes you down one level, not one rank. It was well worth it to me. I think I have all of my classes evenly balanced now.

THE SIX LAWS OF BRINK

1. If your not sure what to do, check the Objective Wheel

2. Stay close to your teammates. A team of lone wolves will always lose

3. Remember the range and accuracy of your gun

4. Keep an eye on your Radar to track your enemy and watch your back

5. Reload often

6. NEVER stop moving

Here's something interesting for the challenges!

The best and easiest way to get through all the challenges at each star rating is to start a brand new character decked out with all your weapon unlocks! The AI in the challenge is in proportion to the rank and level of you character.

So if you have a Level 20 character he is going to face off against an insane AI opponent. A Level 1 will face a rather weak AI.

@Rottsko: If you don't want start over, use a LIGHT body type and just run to the first objective. Once armed and destroyed, change class and sprint to the second objective. I was able to do 2 star in 2 mins 34 sec...I think.
