So, as a special 50th birthday present to myself I met a friend of mine at the South-by-Southwest Music Festival in Austin Texas this past weekend.

Basically, it's a giant music industry conference and there are free day parties and then evening showcases at all the bars and any other space that holds people in downtown Austin for 5 days. All told, there were 2000 (yes - that's the correct number of zeroes) bands playing in "official" events, and then tons of unofficial events on top of that.

I love punk rock - the old school kind like The Ramones and The Clash - and there is a pretty good group of bands that I love that just don't have the following to support touring, but can certainly fill a club and put on a kick-ass show in a bar in Austin.

Here's my favorites from the weekend:

Riverboat Gamblers - These Austin punk rockers imo are the greatest rock and roll band in the world. Bar fucking none. So great to see them live in their native Austin with a filled club of rabid fans. The singer - rookie sensation Mike Wiebe - played the whole gig standing on the bar right above me.

Was able to shoot a pretty crappy iphone video to give you an idea of the scene - so great.

And here's just a little snippet from the end of the show - when they always finish with their theme song "Art of Getting F*cked".

Jack White - Leader of the White Stripes and Raconteurs played two 45-minute sets on Friday night at his "Third Man Records" showcase in the 250-capacity Stage on Sixth venue. I was lucky enough to get in by arriving about an hour before the doors opened. Heard the line reached 3 blocks even though the club was at capacity. The first set was with a band of all women and the second set was with a band of all men. This guy is so fucking talented it's unreal. I am convinced he could play anything and it would be incredible. Great show.

[Note: No - this pic was not taken by me but is from the show. They had an incredibly draconian "No Photography Allowed" rule, and I saw at least 8 people get tossed for trying to take a picture. However, they did post pics from the show on Jack White's web site].

Capsula - Spanish 3-piece garage rockers tore the house down at Iron Bear - which is usually a gay bar but for SXSW is converted to a rock club. I think the gay guys were shocked/amused at the freaky rock show that invaded their abode. This band simply tore it up and obviously had an incredible love for what they do. Best sign I saw inside was in the men's room: "If your paws have been in the honey pot, get HIV tested".

Hex Dispensers - One of my very favorite bands, but they are not as widely popular or well known. They played an afternoon day party at a record store that was super solid. Love their tunes.

Mind Spiders - These guys are another newer band from Austin that play a very cool driving old school style of punk rock with some really interesting new flourishes. They were mesmerizing.

Also got to eat some brisket, sausage, and Texas Beef Ribs at Iron Works barbecue (highly recommended).

Tons more, but this post is probably already TL/DR territory, so I'll end it there. Here's the link to my full set of photos:

NICE! With the exception of Jack White, I have never heard of any of these bands. Where can I find their music? I am a metal head mainly, but do love me some old-school punk rock.

Have you heard of Humble Gods? They are the band that was fronted by Brad "Daddy-X" before he started the Kottonmouth Kings. He and the drummer (who is also the drummer for Kottonmouth Kings now) came from the Orange County Punk Band "Doggystyle," the guitarist is Doug Carion who left the Descendants to help start this band, and the bassist chick is from Betty Blowtorch, who replaced the original bassist, Jason Mathew Thirsk from Pennywise, after he committed suicide. This CD is my fav punk CD, and not just because I am a big KMK fan. They have one before this (that I haven't heard) and a newer one that was released many years after this one that isn't as good.

Dang it man! You should have let me know, Austin is my town! I grew up in Austin (currently live just outside of Austin) Anyways, I could have shown you a couple of better BBQ places ;)

I haven't done SXSW in a looooooooooong time. It's usually a great time though!

ETA:

Ironically, I spent all day saturday smoking a brisket, chicken and some beef short ribs :D

Have you heard of Humble Gods?

No, but me likie.  Love that dude's haircut and as a former skater I love the pool-riding shots.

If you look for Riverboat Gamblers stuff, I would recommend the early album"Something to Crow About" or their newwest full-length "Underneath the Owl"

From Something to Crow About:

From "Underneath the Owl":

The Hex Dispensers are a little more acquired taste, but if you like this then I would recommend the record "Winchester Mystery House". When I first got it I could not stop listening for about a month.

Here's that Spanish band, Capsula.

Definitely more hard rock/psychedelic/garage than punk. Loudest 3-piece band I ever saw*

[* - with the notable exception of Ted Nugent on the "Cat Scratch Fever" tour in 1978 or so. Couldn't hear for a week after that one.]

No lie, the brisket was like sex in your mouth!

We got half a cow slaughtered from my parents (um..they got the other half lol) so we have a TON of beef! My smoker is happy lol!

Awesome man! I wish I had known you were coming, I'm in Austin as well. I'm a huge Riverboat Gamblers fan. I used to go see them in Denton back in the 90's when they were getting popular. Great, great band! I just saw Dropkick Murphy's for the 5th time a couple of weeks ago, with Frank Turner. Awesome show. And so on... Great post, glad you got to see how we roll in ATX... :D

Amazing. I was there as well. A couple buddies live in San Antonio and we hook up every year for SXSW.
Did you see the Pennywise show?

Cool.

I was very close to doing the Pennywise show, but went with the Dirtnap Records showcase at Valhalla instead, as I really wanted to see the Mind Spiders. My friend convinced me that since Pennywise tours, that I would have a chance to see them on tour whereas the Mind Spiders would likely not end up near me.

I hear ya. Pennywise has been my go to band for ever, and this was another chance to see them (with Off!). I've probably seen them like 20 times.

Was definitely a little interested in seeing OFF! How were they? I saw Fear on Thursday night and was completely unimpressed (although to be fair I was never a fan of them in the 80's either).

Jack White's awesome ! I've never been a huge White Stripes fan (even if I had and still have a huge crush on Meg White :x ) but i really liked the Raconteurs.
I guess i really felt for him when I saw that documentary on Netflix, ''This might get loud'' a nice guitar fix with the Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White.
I just couldnt believe that he and his old beat-up Kay he picked up in a thrift store had wwwwwaaaaaaayyyyyyy more tone then the other two and their super-vintage-kick-ass dream guitars ! He's just so f&&??%$#ing talented !!!
