I know this is not considered a sport by many.
But as there are quite a few MPs that play this addictively infuriating game, I thought it deserved a thread of its own.

Here is something for you guys over the pond.
A promotion to get girls into the game, free golf for your daughters.
So get them out there, and it even gives you an excuse to sneak off for 9!

Daughters across America play free golf (http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-digest-woman/blogs/golf-digest-woman/2012/07/daughters-across-america-play.html)

Not happy with his 22 Olympic medals, Michael Phelps fancies a 153ft putt!

Brings back memories of playing Tiger..dumdadum..dumdadum..dumdadum (http://m.youtube.com/?reason=8&rdm=7362#/watch?v=q9YzQ8biVqM&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dq9YzQ8biVqM)

Love this new ad...

Yeah, that ad made me laugh when I saw it a few days back. I haven't played any golf over the last year, and only once over the last 2 years...boooo! However, I think you put it best in calling it an "addictively infuriating" game and I love to play when I have the time and money. Typically pretty relaxing. Before the wife and I got married she worked as a beverage cart girl at a nice course near us, I played 2-3 times a week and grew to love the game. Now I suck something awful though!

01-23-2013, 10:14 AM
I only get to play about once every couple of months. I picked up a small set up clubs for kids but haven't taken my girls out to the driving range yet.

I need to take my 8 y/o back to the range.
He really took to it, and surprised me by playing 9 holes quite a few times without getting bored or tired...

There's rumours that my mates are planning a spring golf trip, tempting, very tempting.

Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good bottle of beer.

Managed half a day of 'Me Time' to play a nice track in Largo.
Got paired up with a retired Carpentry teacher from Ohio, really nice guy, talked about lots of random stuff about our Countries like the Ryder Cup, cold beer vs. warm beer, you lot driving on the wrong side etc ;)

Nice day. Good front nine, shite back in!

Hey Powder.

Saw in the chat that you nearly threw the clubs in the lake!
I'm right there with you brother.
Weekend before last, we went on our yearly 'boys golf trip' which usually means x2 games of golf and shitloads of drink.
We played up in Wales on two championship courses and on the Sunday I picked up at hole 8 because I could not hit the ball!?! It was so damn cold and my hangover just destroyed me. It was one of the longest courses outside the US and it whipped my arse...
Good times though, apart from British pop group 'One Direction' were staying next to our rooms and their security gave us a hard time for drunken behaviour...lol. I thought pop stars did that??? Lots of screaming fans made for funny moments.

Hope your golf picks up, if you chuck yours in the lake, I will sell you mine! They don't fucking work ;)

After the drama his rules violation caused it's going to be tough to catch the leaders, though it is possible and well he's Tiger and does well in situations like this. Cracks me up that they accept phone calls from viewers helping them do their job. I think I'm going to call the NFL on Sunday and see how that works! hahaha

Tiger is up and down, and the field is quite tight so you never know.
That 14 y/o kid is unbelievable though...nerves of steel.

Looks nice and sunny compared to the rain outside and the log fire burning.

Not a golf fan but can someone please explain to me the penalty the teenager got and whatever violation TW got that actually helped him.
I've been hearing about it on twitter nonstop but no explanation.

He was playing too slow. Basically he was holding up all the players behind him. If he is on 10, then the group in front is on 11. However he was playing so slow that the group in front was actually half way through 12. So then a log jam begins behind him.

They issue a first warning and each player in his group is put on the clock. The first player in the group has 60 seconds to take his shot while the others have 40 seconds. A few holes later (I believe on 13) he went over his time and was given and official warning. Then on 17 he did it again and was given a 1 stroke penalty.

People are saying it's not fair because he's just 14, well if your allowed to play at the Masters then you don't get to play the "I'm too young" card. They also tried to say it was a language issue, but he does speak english and was given essentially 2 warnings.

04-13-2013, 03:45 PM
Thanks. What about the Tiger thing?

04-13-2013, 03:55 PM
Thanks. What about the Tiger thing?

He made an illegal drop that put the ball closer to the hole and did not properly record it on his score card. It's more an interpretation call than anything that even the officials did not make. It was someone calling in and giving notice about. Tiger and the committee met about it and agreed to a 2 shot penalty.

People are saying Tiger is getting a free pass on it because of who he is and the it's usually an automatic DQ. But the rule was changed in 2011 to allow a shot penalty instead especially in a situation where the officials don't really thinks it's an infraction. Losing 2 shots is a pretty big penalty and now his him 4 shots behind.

04-13-2013, 04:26 PM
Interesting. All making sense now.

This is a must have for all golfers out there.

PGA Tour Caddie Site (http://pgatourcaddie.com/)

PGA Tour Caddie App (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/pga-tour-caddie/id622851626?mt=8)

Available on the Apple App Store (free at the time of writing) and coming to Android soon.
This has it all. Virtually every course imaginable, GPS guides, flybys, score cards, handicap tracker.
It's hands down the best one I have seen thus far.

You can upgrade to get the pro tips etc, but the basic app is pretty much all you need.

It's the summer, get out there, hit some balls, and most importantly get a beer in the 19th...

True story, Ive played golf (on a real golf course) once in my life. When I was like 15. (I use to putt putt and driving range with my dad often). But anyway, par 3 hole in one. Like the second hole of the course. My dad started crying. It was funny. But im not really a golf guy so it was more of a meh that was cool then a holy crap omg THIS is golf!

Finally had a good round of golf this year, If it wasn't for the triple bogey on hole 2 I would have destroyed my best, glad to have a good game, the driver worked, irons worked awesome and putting was average but had fun the whole time. Got invited to play the midnight tournament and heard the stories about the guy who passed out in the highway, that isn't gonna be me, I need to the ball, yeah it might have a light but it's more the drive home I'm worried about, good fun but too many hours between now and then to keep a drink out of my hand, got my house to put back together with new furniture and windows in the shop and new doors too install, I'm guessing after todays round I'll be back tomorrow for a long day if I get most of my work done today, may the greens be friendly sir stains. Awesome story korny, have yet to hit one myself, today the people I golfed with had an eagle on 2 as it hit the flag and dropped in and his wife almost had one on hole 7. Coolest people ever, they're in their late 60's and always a blast to play with, I need a partner to play the scramble with them, we got tournaments out here on Monday, Wednesday, and couples on Friday, with the bigger tournaments on weekends, great fun today anyways, now back to work or my golf time tomorrow will be scratched cause I didn't get a damn thing done LOL

My Mum & Dads Golf Club is 100 years old this year, and as part of the celebrations they had one of those 'trick shot' guys stop by today. He was unfrickinbelievable! He can hit a putter over 300 yards!!! Such coordination.
My 8y/o had a blast.

that is sweet stains, been watching the other videos after that one, saw him with the putter, just crazy. The baseball swings were cool, I wouldn't want to ruin my clubs trying those....I'd need a few drinks first. I think I could do the baseball one though LOL Hoping for a good morning on the course tomorrow....after last weekend I have high hopes, guessing it won't end up that way. We'll see what happens, I hit all the fairways last weekend but the first hole, great iron shots, putting was to be the normal crap but I was on for birdies on all but the triple bogey on the 2nd. It had the makings to be my best round this year, I blame it on roofing the day before. Roofed again on Friday and poured concrete today, so atleast I got an excuse LOL

I got a boys golf weekend on the cards next week, and as it was my turn to organise it, I had to come up with the scoring format.
I thought some of you fellas might want to give this a try. Should be quite fun, just for something a little different.
Plus we are all sad old gamers playing which helps.
(Shame about the lame name of it...'Ball Of Duty'...I had a mental block)

If any golfers were interested, the format above worked a treat and went down really well.
It made a nice change to the usual boring formats that we normally play to.
On a side note, the weather was perfect, the course was in great condition for November, and the beer was plentiful.
Good times.

There was even a short vid my brother took, which gives you an idea how chilly it was. (No snow yet!)

For Sir Stains....I have been playing pretty good the last month, more birdies than ever and an eagle and almost a double eagle, sat. july 30th around 7:30 am, my time zone I got my first hole in one, what a sight to see that ball disappear and in wonder if it didn't roll off the back of the green somehow and I just missed it, had a few people playing with me and the owner of the course was changing water and just turned it on 3 and shutting off the water on 2...he saw it closer than I did, got a little certificate and another on the wall in the club house, had to buy beer for everyone there, good thing it happened early LOL Thought you would get a kick out of my one good shot

This weekend saw the sad passing of one of Golf's most iconic figures.
The Legendary Arnold Palmer.
May you rest in peace Sir. Pour yourself an Arnold Palmer at the 19th in the Sky.

Few people have transformed any sport – perhaps any human activity – the way Arnold Palmer, who died on Sunday, transformed golf. Before he came along in the 1950s, golf on both sides of the Atlantic was snobby, reactionary and made little effort to broaden its appeal. Though some vestiges of the old exclusiveness still cling on, Mr Palmer threw most of golf’s gates wide open, with lasting consequences. From a modest Pennsylvania background, he played aggressively and, young and good-looking, he pulled in the crowds and rode the wave of the television age. He treated all four “majors” seriously, travelling regularly to Britain and lifting our sometimes parochial Open championship on to the world stage. He spotted the financial potential of image rights; even this year he was still golf’s fifth-highest lifetime earner, though he last won a major in 1964. The working-class, racially diverse, male and female golf champions of the modern world are his legacy. Golf is loved and loathed as few sports. But it was Arnold Palmer, with his skill and his sportsmanship, who made it what is loved and loathed today.

Anyone watching this? For me The Open (https://www.theopen.com/) has to be my favourite Major.
It may not have the pristine beauty of Augusta or the jaw dropping majesty and magnitude of the US tracks, but The Open is held on one of ten links golf courses, in the middle of the British Summer (see pic above). So it inevitably throws up some challenging conditions to test the metal of the worlds best.

Day 2 saw a strong showing of US players at the top of the table, but in these conditions anything can happen.

This year it is held at Royal Birkdale near Liverpool.
Which brings back distant memories of this (http://www.mobygames.com/game/royal-birkdale-championship-golf) video game from 1983. Anyone else remeber playing that one?
