Honestly, there is nothing better in the world than sitting out in the lineup waiting for the next set. Then dropping into a perfect wave that forms the most amazing barrel. It truly does make you feel one with nature.

I learned to surf when I moved to Hawaii years ago, and it made such a huge impact on my life. During the 6 years I lived on the Islands, I ate, breathed, and bled surfing. I made so many friends in the industry and was introduced to some amazing surf spots that tourists will never find and never be welcome in. I have taken countless surf trips and spent way too much money on the sport. The problem is, I now live in the desert of Arizona...

I watch videos and check out pictures daily to help tide me over until my next trip, although I think it makes me miss it even more.

What I am planning on doing with this thread is to post a pic or 2 everyday that I find and has some sort of impact to me. I'm hoping to spark the interest of others who may not have had any exposure to this passion of mine.

For me it's amazing to see someone duck-diving with a powerful wave above them (especially in shallow water like this). Duck-diving is propelling yourself under a breaking wave while paddling out to the lineup. If you didn't dive under, the wave would just push you back and you'd have to start over (if it didn't crush you). It always makes the pic better when it's a female...

Here is one of my favorite pictures. This is Laird Hamilton, who is a pioneer of big wave surfing, inventing boards that allowed you to be towed into a wave via wave runner. These waves are so big there is no way a person could paddle into them. This shot was taken at Teahupoo in Tahiti. This break is very shallow with razor sharp reef waiting just under the water. The power in this wave in simply incredible.

Here is a video of that wave. For the impatient, go to the 2:00 mark.

Great thread that man.

I know no feeling greater than sliding on water regardless of the craft (no engines).
I have surfed goofy (right foot forward) for 25 years now, and it is my biggest love outside of family.
In times of wave drought I feel a hunger like no other, it has given me the greatest feeling of being alive that I know.

4640

It has given me a connection with nature that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
I feel blessed to have had the chances to surf nearly every Ocean, most of Europe, Indonesia, Fiji, Australia, and more.
Surfed along side dolphins, seen whales at sunrise, sharks at sunset, seals, just me and a gull even.

My greatest wave in memory was in Raglan, New Zealand.

4639

But my best times are with friends and family even if the surf is crap, it's always a pleasure to be in the sea.

Thanks for sharing this HC?
Great choice in wave by the way.
I was lucky enough to talk with Jack McCoy this summer (the guy who shot the Laird footage) and he was telling us about the moment you see the camera drop a bit during that wave...that was his jaw hitting the boat in a WTF moment! Lol.
Tahiti just looks insane on those days.

So to all who ever get the chance to try this dance on water...
Do it, it may change your life.

Like I said above, there are few pleasures in life better than getting barreled, and actually pulling out.

Trestles is a set of surf spots at San Onofre State Beach just sout of San Clemente, CA. It is named after a (no longer there) wooden trestle bridge that must be walked under in order to reach the beach.

http://bp3.blogger.com/_kDyTcbycWv4/R7Z8ixPoiwI/AAAAAAAAB0E/7fGetqpjkkg/s400/Trestles---Overview.jpg

Long story short, bullshit bureaucrats are trying to completely ruin this place with expansion of a 6 lane toll road going right through the beach state park/reserve, with future businesses to be introduced later.

One of the biggest protectors of Trestles (and every other surf spot out there) is an organization called the Surfrider Foundation. I was a member of the Oahu, Hawaii chapter for a long time before moving to the desert, and still give donate every year to the cause. They have chapters all over the US and multiple international groups as well. The Surfrider Foundation mission, simply, is "the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network." They do some great things, from protecting entire beach parks from being destroyed, down to weekly beach cleanups. Visit them here: http://surfrider.org/

Here is the Wikipedia write up on the Trestles toll road, if you're interested.

The California Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA) is seeking to construct a 16-mile long six-lanes wide toll highway (graded for eight lanes) through San Onofre State Beach/Park and a habitat reserve in Orange County, joining the San Diego Freeway at Trestles.[5]

The Toll Road, which is one of several routes that could be constructed to extend California State Route 241, is favored by several business groups and public officials from Orange County as a way to ease future traffic congestion.[6] The particular Toll Road route through San Onofre is opposed by more than two dozen members of California’s congressional delegation in Washington, D.C.,[7] thirty-eight California legislators[8] including California's United States Senator Barbara Boxer,[7] Surfrider Foundation, Defenders of Wildlife,[9] The Sierra Club, The Natural Resources Defense Council,[10] the California State Parks Foundation, the California State Park and Recreation Commission[11] the Native American United Coalition to Protect Panhe, The City Project, the Save San Onofre Coalition,[10][12] and Save Trestles,[13] among others. Opposition is based upon the damage to the environment that would result from construction and operation of the Toll Road, the loss of park camping and recreational areas, the loss/damage to a site sacred to Native Americans, and studies that show that traffic congestion would actually increase on the San Diego Freeway if the toll road is built through San Onofre Beach.[14] A survey of Orange County voters revealed that while 52% favored "a" toll road, 66% opposed the proposed route that would take the Toll Road through San Onofre State Park.[15]

On February 6, 2008 the California Coastal Commission denied a Coastal Permit for the route of the proposed 241 Toll Road that would have cut through San Onofre and the Reserve, saying that of the eight possible routes considered, the one sought by the TCA was the most environmentally damaging.[5] Had a permit been granted, it would have been the first toll road to run through a California state park.[16] The Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA) appealed the Coastal Commission's decision to the U.S. Department of Commerce, which has until January, 2009 to issue its decision following the public hearing held September 22, 2008.[17]

As of August 20, 2008, there are at least four lawsuits pending. The lawsuits have been filed by various groups and organizations, which have banded together in various groupings, all with the goal of stopping the toll road through San Onofre State Beach.[18]

On December 18, 2008 The Department of Commerce announced that it would uphold the California Coastal Commission’s ruling that found the TCA’s proposed extension of the 241 Toll Road inconsistent with the California Coastal Act.[19] In a release issued by the Department of Commerce, the DOC noted that at least one reasonable alternative to the project existed, and that the project was not necessary in the interest of national security.[20]

Surfrider Foundation’s Assistant Environmental Director Mark Rauscher said this about the December 18 decision: "This decision is a significant milestone in our efforts to protect San Onofre State Beach Park and the surrounding environment; and underscores the effectiveness of grassroots activism."[21]

Panhe is the site of an ancient Acjachemen village[22] in the San Mateo campground area of San Onofre State Beach, straddling the San Diego-Orange county border off Cristianitos Road near Trestles.[23] It remains a sacred, ceremonial, cultural, and burial site for the Acjachemen people. Many Acjachemen people[24] trace their lineage back to Panhe. It is the site of the first baptism in California, and in 1769, the first close contact between Spanish explorers, Catholic missionaries, and the Acjachemen people. The Acjachemen people built the mission at San Juan Capistrano. The advocacy group Save Panhe and San Onofre State Beach state that not only is Panhe one of the most historically significant sacred sites of the Acjachemen people,[25] but that Panhe is also important to all Californians and Americans.[26]

If ever given the chance you have to take it.

I snowboarded for years while growing up in Iowa, then living in Colorado. Although I love it, I haven't glided through powder in 13 years (haven't even seen the snow in that time).

I count myself as very fortunate to fall within the times described in the earlier paragraphs of this article.

The Death of The Surf Trip (http://www.surfphoto.co/surfphoto/2012/12/the-death-of-the-surf-trip.html)

It summarises my feelings towards social media, and the angst I feel when away from real life adventure.
There was no other feeling compared to the excitement of a tech free road trip with mates. Just the boards, beers, some cards, maybe a guitar, and the open road. You went out and found adventure, you didn't google it.

Last year I was talking to an electrician at work, comparing our travels across Australia, separated by 15 years.
I loved every minute, the open roads, the new places/friends, mystery spots, random swells, occasional letters from loved ones back home.
He hated every minute, as he was constantly checking what his friends were doing back home on Facebook!?!
I must be missing the big picture here.

A few of the following extracts say a lot to me...

For decades this was the surf trip. You surfed, you read, you played Shithead to the death, maybe some travel Connect 4, and you arsed about as only mates on a surf trip can. You interacted with the world and ended with hangovers and a whole pile of good memories.

The rise of social media and the 'always on' culture has been with us for about five years. I've done trips where I've got up in the morning and asked the crew already up what the surf was like and got a shrug. They'd not walked 20 metres down the path by the house to check the surf as they preferred to sit on the couch and vegetate over Facebook. That blew my mind.

like hanging out in a monastery sponsored by Apple. A roomful of faces lit up by their dark mirrors. No one talks apart from to ask if you've seen something on the web yet

Of course the Interweb and social media are not going anywhere. It's tentacles are wrapped around modern life so tightly we have no choice but to deal with it. But we can use them as the tools they are meant to be. Entertainment, sharing and connectivity at the right time in the right place.

When a scene from Apocalypse Now was shot on an obscure beach in the Philippines in the late 70s, little did the film-makers know they were giving birth to the country's surfing culture.

"Charlie don't surf," says the reckless and irrepressible Colonel Kilgore, in one of the most memorable lines of the Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now.

Surfer Mick Fanning escapes shark attack in South Africa

An Australian surfer has made an incredible escape after encountering two sharks during a major competition in South Africa.

Mick Fanning was competing in Jeffreys Bay, on the eastern Cape, when one of the sharks approached his surfboard...

"I was just sitting there and I felt something just get stuck in my leg rope, and I was kicking trying to get it away," Fanning told Fox Sports.

"I just saw fins. I was waiting for the teeth."
