View Full Version : Destiny - New Bungie Project

The new project from the creators of Halo.

Back in May, it was first revealed (http://mp1st.com/2012/05/22/bungie-prepares-new-universe-published-under-activision-for-a-2013-release/) that Bungie’s newest universe, dubbed “Destiny,” would span four different titles with the first one appearing exclusively on the current-gen Xbox 360 and the rest eventually making their way to the “Xbox 720,” “PS4″ and PC. It was also confirmed to be a “sci-fantasy, action-shooter game” that would see four pieces of DLC in between each title’s release of every two years.
Today, IGN (http://ca.ign.com/articles/2012/11/28/destiny-story-details-concept-art-leaked) has received a ton of leaked details, including the basic plot, setting and description of Bungie’s mysterious new universe along with some interesting concept art.
According to the leaked document, Bungie claims that ”the ambition is to create a universe as deep, tangible and relatable as that of the Star Wars franchise.” Destiny will be ”centered around adventure and fun,” and “is designed to be highly social while also allowing for open exploration.”
Additionally, it mentioned that Destiny would be “social at its core” and will offer a “world to explore with friends, both old and new.” Destiny is also described as “fun and accessible to all, and always filled with friends.” If it is indeed not an MMO, it would seem that Bungie will still be incorporating some heavy social elements, based on the descriptions above. Multiplayer, either competitive or co-operative, could possibly play a large role in Bungie’s next project.

The document goes on to detail the basic set up of the story and setting that players will experience by fall next year:

Our story begins seven hundred years from now in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age. A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it’s here for, but only that it’s our protector. Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City. We are young ‘knights’ tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters and – eventually – overcoming it.

Reaching out to Bungie for comment, they told IGN:

We’re not quite ready to take the wraps off our next universe, but in light of recent events we thought we’d give fans something a little more official over at Bungie.net (http://bungie.net/). Feel free to drop by and say hello! There’s much more to come.
Shortly after, Bungie posted this official image with this caption:

http://mp1st.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/thirdtimesthecharm-600x337.jpg

Go ahead. Take a peek. It’s alright. We weren’t quite ready, but we will be soon, and we can’t wait to finally show you what we’ve really been up to.
Stick around, we haven’t even started yet.
Bungie also confirmed to Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/5963807/story-details--art-leak-from-bungies-next-game-the-sci+fi-epic-destiny) that “the document and some of the art is genuine, and is somewhat representative of the game. They declined to say if the art was out of date.”
Lastly, it would seem that Destiny could be the final name for Bungie’s newest project, considering the URL “destiny.com” was featured in other images provided to IGN.

Destiny is a first-person “shared world shooter,” similar to a massive multiplayer online shooter. It will constantly require an internet connection, but no paid subscription will be required.
Destiny will be primarily a console shooter, available only on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, later on “future generation technology.” A release date has yet to be announced.
You’ll be able to play Destiny like an MMO, either completely solo, or with friends in small co-op groups. Friends can drop in and out seamlessly, similar to games like Borderlands 2 with a mix of Borderlands to and, of course, Halo. Multiplayer is opt-in, meaning that you’ll have to volunteer to play online with others. “Lobbies” will not play a part in matchmaking, but there will certainly be more to come in regards to multiplayer.
Players will play as a generic hero called a Guardian but will be able to choose one of three classes available: the Titan (weapon-focused), the Hunter (stealth-focused) and the Warlock (magic-focused). Magic does play a part in the gameplay as it is tied to the story. Players “borrow” abilities from the mysterious “Traveler,” a gigantic alien space ship hovering over the last city on Earth, presumably protecting it from mysterious alien invaders.
Weapon and gear customization will also play a large role in Destiny’s gameplay, as will vehicles. Players will be able to travel between every planet in our solar system via space travel; however, it is unsure whether space flight will be an actual gameplay element.
According to the vidoc above, it appears that there will be a social companion tool, available on iOS devices, that will launch with Destiny.
Destiny can now be pre-ordered for either the Xbox 360 (http://www.amazon.com/Destiny-Xbox-360/dp/B002I096Q4/ref=sr_tr_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1361127827&sr=1-1&keywords=Destiny) or PlayStation 3 (http://www.amazon.com/Destiny-Playstation-3/dp/B003O6N356/ref=sr_tr_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1361127827&sr=1-2&keywords=Destiny) through Amazon for a Destiny Star Map digital wallpaper, or through GameStop (http://www.gamestop.com/collection/destiny) for a sweet double-sided poster.

This look really interesting. I'm still not sure exactly what it is yet, but it looks amazing. I have to see some more footage to really get a feel for it. I'm glad it is on both the PS3 and XBOX. I might wait and see the next gen console version and get that if the timing works out. Have to wait until the Sony announcement tomorrow.

After reading the article in Game Informer yesterday, I am definitely interested in finding out more about this game. It sounds like it has a lot of potential to be great, but like others above have said I want to see some actual footage of gameplay before I pre-order.

Haven't read the other articles yet, but based off the reviews and "insider" articles I have seen there is a paragraph in that first article that hits my opinion square on the head...

But even so, while playing, the comparisons kept coming. I kept trying to figure out where Destiny fit. What is Destiny's spirit, its identity? The only thing I can seem to come up with is "sci-fi," which isn't really an identity at all. Destiny doesn't match the exhilaration that comes with playing with titans in Titanfall. It doesn't match the adrenaline rush high of Call of Duty.It doesn't have the same sort of memorable spirit as Borderlands. It doesn't have the sort of addicting loot that characterizes Diablo. It doesn't carry the same sort of intrigue that comes with investigating a collapsed society, like in Fallout—there was some story attached to the strike missions I played, but it was forgettable. Destiny doesn't have the interesting sci-fi politics of Mass Effect. Based on what I've played—which, again, is but a small sliver of the overall game—Destiny almost seems like the off-brand version of Halo, if Halo had more MMO-ish elements. That will still sound exciting to some of you, I'm sure.

For a game that has been taunted for a LONG time now as being one of the more inventive games to hit consoles in a while, I am not reading ANY reviews noting of true innovation. Everyone makes it sound like a game that has awe-inspiring graphics and no heart.

I don't think Destiny will be the "greatest game" ever. But I have 0 doubt that it will be amazing. It might not have MAJOR innovation, but its got enough going for it to separate itself enough from the now out dated over used template of online shooters. Take TitanFall for example. What innovation has that brought to shooters? Nothing new besides faster paced wall running controls to give the online shooter scene a fresh feel. All I hear from people is how Titanfall has revolutionized and changed the online shooter landscape.

So Destiny might not have a clear cut obvious never been done before game changing innovational aspect. But it sure as heck is going to bring a fresh new take and new fun way to enjoy online shooters. To me that's enough to make me happy.

Titanfall is not all that innovative to me, though it does put a lot of solid things together to a more polished shooter IMO. The wall-running/double-jumping/hanging coupled with custom loadouts and titans makes it stand out enough from the rest to me. Borderlands is another game to me that didn't do anything extremely ground-breaking to the table, but it is a well-designed game that emphasizes it's strengths (loot system, endless gun possibilities, strong co-op, and amazing writers) well enough to make it stand out. In reading the other articles in this thread, and the various other snippits I have found, they all seem to point to Destiny not really having much "pop" to it outside of the graphics. Which is why I made the commment about it having "awe-inspiring graphics with no heart" above...even if bringing nothing truly innovative, one or more facets of the game have to help it stand out in some way.

Who knows, maybe the end product will yield a truly special multiplayer platform, which honestly has been a standout area for Bungie in past games. If that's the case, that is what would draw me in to buy it. I grow tired of them from time to time, but I am in the minority here who still love to play Halo. To this day, nothing (even Battlelog) comes close to how detailed Bungie was able to get early on with Halo (eventually became Waypoint). It got as granular as telling me which hotspot on which map with which gun I created the most carnage. I loved that, and hated that no other game came close to that. If this game has a "hook" though, I am willing to bet money it will be the multiplayer aspect and/or online stats.

The main reason I bring up innovation is because they have amped their own game so much for so long as being some wave of the future game. It's pretty anticlimactic to read all of these reviews that say it is 'meh' or boring. I understand promoting your game, but they may have gone overboard a bit in promoting just how innovative their game will be in the end; which will result in them likely getting slammed by critics at launch regardless of how solid the game is or is not.

Borderlands is an amazing franchise just for the art-style alone. Really looking forward to The Pre-Sequel.

I'm totally looking forward to Destiny as well. The concept is very cool. We just got the XBOne this year so this is the first title I'm really excited to play along with hopefully a Halo release in the near future. I love Battlefield on the new console but there are issues that need to be addressed...COD is still COD and Titanfall is a lot of fun and is very fast paced...but does not hold my attention for more than an hour at a time.

Looking forward to more reviews and gameplay leading up to release.

I agree that if you hype your game up to a certain level, it could come back to bite you in the ass. Im all for hyping up your own game. You should be excited and passionate and feel great about your own product. They have a track record of creating solid and revolutionary games. I would consider the Halo series as revolutionary to the fps genre not just one specific Halo game. So I would not expect a single Destiny game to match the revolutionary/epic-ness of the Halo series. The potential is there. In concept and in my imagination Destiny could be something truly amazing. I believe this is how the devs feel.

Based on the first impressions it seems people are not walking away with that same feeling. Maybe its one of those slow burn but grows on you epic. Maybe they have not even gotten a legitimate taste of what Destiny is REALLY all about. Or maybe, the game is all graphics and "fun" but truly lacks soul. This is exactly what happened to TF imo. TF is a blast to play. But it just feels like an empty game in spirit. Like it has so much potential and in theory is EPIC! But in reality comes up way short.

I cannot wait till the full game hits so we can get a true taste of what Bungie has in store for us.

Yeah, one of the best franchises out there right now in my opinion. I wish pre-sequel were also coming to next-gen consoles, but still REALLY looking forward to it. No way I'll be getting rid of my 360 now that it was announced.

I love seeing a company geeked out about their own game for sure. My only thing is it is nice when the the excitement leads to legitimate hype...right now reviews aren't showing the hype is legit. Again, though nobody has had a chance to play the multiplayer platform yet, so I'm wondering if they are saving the true awesome parts for there. Who knows. I am looking forward to trying out the beta, and fingers crossed it turns out great. I am still approaching it with a good bit of skepticism though since my interest has been peaked for this game for so long and it has gotten mediocre reviews so far.

Hopefully the multiplayer blows us away though. One thing they have talked about so far that I really like is the fact that the co-op mode can yield massive rewards that can carry over to multiplayer; that could make for some rather unique gameplay.

In Destiny you can't jump into competitive multiplayer as soon as you pop the disc in the drive - a key point of difference with Bungie's Halo. You have to unlock PvP, but once you've done so with one character, all characters tied to your account can play PvP without restriction. According to Green, you need to play "a couple of hours, tops", to unlock PvP. "And that's only on your first character."

Then there is this that makes me worry that PVP will be an unbalanced mess.

All players in Halo's much-loved competitive multiplayer, for example, began each match on a level playing field. Not so in Destiny. In Destiny, improving your character with better equipment, weapons and abilities is the name of the game.

If it had splitscreen it'd pretty much be a guaranteed buy, disappointed they decided to leave local co-op out. Still, I wouldn't mind picking up the Destiny bundle with the white PS4 and controller.

Ladies and gentlemen (and freak), if you need a beta code and don't want to preorder, read on and do what I did. Amazon.com does not charge for preordered goods until they ship. The Destiny beta codes are emailed out shortly after you preorder. So go ahead and place the order, receive and sign up with your beta code, then cancel said preorder.

The Team MP (http://www.bungie.net/7_Team-MP/en/Groups/Detail?groupId=114818) group now has a Clan option, linked to PSN and XBox live, don't forget to join.

Wow, I really really like this game...which surprises me. I feel like this game is like an Apple product...it really doesn't look that impressive on the internet, twitch or youtube, until you get your hands on it and play it. The game is absolutely gorgeous! I can't believe how good and moody this game looks. I actually jumped one time in the tutorial type area where I was in a dark underground area and something fell out of the ceiling. The gunplay is super intuitive and I feel like it's a very similar feel to Battlefield (although not as hyper realistic, a little more forgiving, especially with sniper rifles, like Borderlands). It reminds me a lot of Borderlands 2 without the sense of humor and over-the-top characters. I was playing with some MP guys last night (uglyduck and mechatool) and that made it much more fun (which is similar to Borderlands 2 and playing through with Kamakazi). I would say not to judge this game until you have actually played it, I am feeling like I probably want to pre-order this one after my short time with it last night. Pretty cool stuff!

These is only one thing I agree with for the outcry. Timed exclusive content is fine and is usually around 30 days. So when someone buys a "season pass" the exclusive time (Like CoD on Xbox and BF3 on PS3) is not too big of a deal. But when you ask someone to buy a season pass and then tell them that the content they are paying for will not be available to them for a year after release, that is a little extreme.

Instead they should remove that exclusive content from the season pass and lower the season pass price for xbox, then when the DLC comes out whoever wants it, can buy it separately if they choose.

Halo was owned and produced by MS Studio's. Bungie was a First party dev. The BF DLC actually hit Playstation first, the only BF DLC to come to Xbox first was Second Assault.

Honestly the solutions is to own both consoles. Then you can sit back and laugh! :couch2:

Thanks to RC I tried out the beta last night. I've never been a huge fan of futuristic sci-fi games, but this was a lot of fun. The ability to just jump into single player missions with friends is awesome. The map design is great and gunplay was solid. I'm going to play some more and give the multiplayer a go, but I will probably go ahead and pre-order this one. Seems like we will have a big MP presence which will make this even better.

Got in some beta time last night. Like the alpha build, it is running nice and smooth.

This game looks, feels, and sounds like a Halo game (not saying that's bad). But its so much more. Seems to be a lot of depth with upgrading yourself and weapons. However, like Halo, I'm not liking the competitive multiplayer. I'll have to give it a few more chances.

This game will be a blast with 1 or 2 MPeeps joining up on the journey (think most of the missions are 1-3 players). Doesn't seem as fun solo, but luckily I hooked up with some good random last night.

Definite buy.

Good games last night with Remec, Lore and Mecha. Having other MPs in-game during story mode missions will be great. I ran through most missions by myself except for the last one with Remec...that thing wouldn't die!! Going back through the earlier ones with Lore and Mecha was much easier. It will be a big benefit to have a MP with more advanced weapons to help out.
-Pre-orders: are they all the same? Seems like they all give you access to the vanguard armory. Is GameStop the only one with the red Sparrow? What pre-orders (if any) are you all doing?

Where exactly in Amazon is the promotion?

It's actually just a promotion amazon offers on their "Amazon Store Card" credit cards. Something like 6 months no interest for purchases $299 or more, 12 months for purchases $599 or more. Can't remember the exact amounts. Of course if you don't pay it off in time you get retroactively hit with something like 24% interest rate, but as long as you get it paid off it works alright. So a console, controller, some games, etc to hit $600, then divide the total by 12 months and make a small payment on it each month to get it paid off in time and not pay interest. :thumb:

Trying to figure out the deal with emblems & marks. The emblems are so expensive the must have some benefits. An emblem might be needed to unlock the moon mission or maybe a certain level of fame.

I got a code from Mech (Thanks for that sir!!) and I downloaded the beta last night. I hope to log on at some point this week, maybe Tuesday and see what's up, with this. I had some great games with Lore and Kamakazi last night. Was going to join some of the other gents, but they were going into PVP and I was only level 4 and Kamakazi was level 2. I am really loving this game. I am hoping that they can make it different and unique enough so that it doesn't feel the way Borderlands does when you get too far into it...a grind. I like some of the new guns I am getting, but those plasma rifles do really blow now matter what the damage is that they do. I ran into a weird bug last night where I would have equipped a fully stocked sniper rifle, then I would go into my inventory and switch it out for one of those rifles that have the purple swirls and once I did that, it would kill all my secondary ammo...even when I switch back to the same sniper rifle, all my ammo is gone...hope this fix that bug! (I will make bets that it will be fixed faster than BF4's weapon pickup bug!!) Hope to play some more later this week!

I played some rounds of MP at level 6 and constantly got smoked by folks with way better armor/weapons. Got some decent kills in, but felt like I was constantly getting one shotted while trying to get enough rounds on target with my primary. So haven't loved the PvP much so far. Some different modes and maps, or playing with MPs could definitely make it fun though. Did the Strike mission, first time I teamed up with anyone, and had a blast. Now I'm bummed to be level capped as I was enjoying the upgrades and perks. Will probably try PvP again now, and then decide whether to start over with another class, or try to keep getting better gear for my Hunter. There's a lot to do in the Beta, and plenty of replay value, so I'm sure the full game will be fun for a good long time.

I'm surprised they're not going the route Titanfall took and open beta to everyone to load the servers.

If you play on the 26th you get some special stuff, maybe thats when they will try and load the servers.

The Alpha impressed me as I had very low expectations. The game looks great and runs smooth. That said, after a 3+ hours with the beta, I doubt I will be getting the game.

The MP has zero value at all. In other FPS games it doesn't matter if someone else is ranked higher with access to "better" weapons as a good player can over come that. Not here, if you are ranked lower and the other player has more powerful weapons, you're dead. It's incredibly unbalanced. If I want to play an arena shooter where people jump around like maniac's, well there is Titanfall which is far better in balancing and gameplay or the Halo Collection which will offer similar gameplay and over 100 MP maps along with 4 full games for the same price.

The real draw is the single player and co-op. Though after just a few hours it was already becoming incredibly repetitive and boring and there seems to be no real story payoff except unlocking newer and better weapons to bring into the MP, which, is not very good. Run towards objective, kill a few fallen, find objective, kill boss and some more fallen and then...... maybe get an unlock with little to no story pay-off.

Add me back onto the "PASS" list.

That pretty much sums it up Retro. Plays like a FPS MMO. My hope is the full game is significantly more involved regarding story/missions/locations.

I'm getting it either way, as I enjoy the game. But the MP is a pass for sure.

After playing the supposedly "balanced" MP, where level, defense, and damage differences aren't supposed to count, it'll be interesting to get into the "Iron Banner" or whatever they call it this weekend. I'm expecting it to be even more unbalanced, but who knows, maybe the problems with the standard MP are because of the balancing. I've been leveling my second character, a Titan this time, and I'm interested to see if MP plays different vs my original Hunter, whose skills and weaponry felt nerfed in PvP.

Even having played all the missions, I'm enjoying going through them again. I got through the first 3 missions and up to level 4 with my Titan in less than an hour last night, and still enjoyed it. Didn't feel boringly repetitive. I'm looking forward to exploring all the maps of the full game, playing the missions, and most of all continuing to level up and unlock new skills, weapons and armor. I'm a total sucker for unlocks and leveling though. I'll keep playing just about anything as long as I can keep getting more badass. I definitely think they could have focused more on the co-op aspect rather than multiplayer. Local splitscreen is the big thing missing from the game IMO.

I don't have many complaints about the game overall though. I find the mouse cursor style of menus to not make much sense and be a hassle at times, and some of the holding down buttons rather than pushing them is an odd design choice. My biggest annoyance so far has been not being able to skip lengthy story cutscenes on my second character. For a game that seems to encourage having multiple characters and playthroughs, this makes no sense at all.

Maybe it's because I've mostly been a playstation player, didn't play much Halo, haven't played Titanfall that I feel like the gameplay style fills a unique niche for me. I enjoy the hell out of double jumping around and destroying enemies. I enjoy the gunplay, melee, and special skills. The really powerful skills and heavy weapons seem to take long enough or have ammo rare enough to be a thrill when they come around. I like having other random players running around the world, the public events are pretty cool. I've done most of the missions solo, and appreciate that you don't have to team up, but can get involved in a big skirmish with others helping out. If I'd had high hopes for the MP portion I'd probably be disappointed, but so far I just look at it as one more thing to do in the game. If I feel like it I can jump in for a few matches. I'm looking forward to checking out the other MP modes, and hope that having more maps, modes, and level spread will get rid of some of the issues. In the beta there are obviously a lot of folks mostly just playing MP. They have better weapons, armor, and more practice, so it tends to be a slaughter. The best rounds I've had were right after the beta came back online yesterday, since it came back early, not everyone knew, MP was a random assortment and it felt like a much more balanced fight.

All in all I've been surprised with how much I enjoy the game, how well it's hooked me in. I'm looking forward to the full game and seeing what else it will have to offer. I'm looking forward to amassing glitter and spending it on pointless bling that's purely cosmetic. I want to know what's up with the different factions, what they point of different ships are, etc etc etc. I don't care that much about where the story is going, and I don't care that I don't care. I'm just enjoying having a new FPS that's a ton of fun to play.

I've only put in a couple of hours so far, but at this point I echo Retro. The game itself becomes rather repetitive to me. The crucible matches are ridiculous if you aren't a level 8 yet...the servers do a crappy job at balancing. For example, my first game I was on Bravo side with the highest rank being 6 while the other team were all level 8; we got crushed and it was nigh impossible to kill any of them due to shields and superior guns. I have not done any co-op yet, so maybe that changes things enough to make it more fun.

That being said the repetitiveness kind of reminds me of Borderlands, except fun.

It all feels too "floaty" and that was a huge issue for me with Halo. And like Halo, the story looks rich and deep on paper but just isn't relayed through the game itself.

Take the Tower, it is 100% trying to copy the Citadel from Mass Effect, but fails to have any life to it. It just feels dead, a glorified menu with no real character. Hell I'd rather just have a menu screen I could go and buy upgrades and such from as the Tower just feels like a pain.

While the events at first seemed cool, they got old and repetitive by the second one I saw.

If I want an FPS I'll play Halo, CoD,TF, BF, etc. If I want a space opera, I'll play Mass Effect. If I want a RPG to get lost in, I'll play Fallout. Destiny seems to be trying to be all things while not doing particularly well at any, in my opinion.

HardlyCapable13

I agree, the tower annoys the hell out of me.

Another thing that gets quite old (in the beta at least) is the repetition of enemies, and their lack of AI. I can just about time it to the millisecond when they'll jump out of cover, fire a couple shots, and duck back in.

What are these "events" everyone is talking about?

My original fears about the game were surrounding how it would stand apart from Halo, Borderlands, TitanFall, et cetera. It has a lot of aspects I love from these other games, but none of them done quite as well or as well woven together as I would have hoped. For example, the loot chests in Borderlands make it worthwhile to roam the world looking for them. There are not many chests in this beta, and when I find them they are rarely anything other than currency; I've gotten my first special weapon and a crappy hand-cannon otherwise.

I agree that the Tower just seems lifeless overall, which is odd to be filled with so many people.

For me, I know Borderlands can get repetitive, but the storyline and effects (shock, acid, etc) make it worth continuing the march through; also you pretty much have to change your gameplay style depending on your character. I'm not seeing that with this game yet. The storyline is a little weak so far (but it is a beta, so can't really judge on that I guess) and I can take the same approach with both of the characters I have tried so far. This may change though as I unlock more of my class upgrades...so maybe I am being to hasty in my opinions of the game.

I understand this is a beta, and I didn't expect a perfectly polished game. The graphics overall are great though, and I have encountered few bugs. My issues are with things such as the terrible matchmaking logic (hopefully this is significantly different in the release) and slightly smarter AI for enemies.

Again, I went at this solo last night, so I am hopeful that going in co-op mode with other MPs will drastically change my opinion.

What are these "events" everyone is talking about?

I assume they are talking about the seemingly random occurance of "community events" that happen in-game. I was walking around minding my own business on the map and suddenly got an optional mission pop-up to protect a fallen pod. I run over to do so and realize that the other players in the map got the same optional mission. So we had 3-5 players cycle through the course of a 5 minute mission protecting this thing. People ranged in rank from 5 to 8. It was a nice twist if all of the events are the exact same. I've only had that one, so not certain.

Don, I agree with the character selection. I would like to see more variety, and as you said, you can literally play them the same style. On the PS4 beta and alpha I played a titan. I picked warlock on the X1, and there is little to no difference. Very odd...

I do love the optional missions when roaming the world (like you said). It's cool how even if you aren't grouped with others, everyone comes together to achieve a common goal.

As for the missions, if you haven't done the strike mission yet, it's great. It's co-op only, so it will pair you with randoms, but would be way better with MPeeps.

After playing a couple nights of this and leveling up my hunter to 8 I am starting to feel like this game is all about open world co-op and not really about PVP. I noticed this pattern a lot at E3 this year and I am on the welcoming bandwagon for this line of thought. Kamikazi and I loved the co-op mode from BF3 and were sad to see it disappear on BF4. In a time where many developers are struggling with trying to figure out netcode in a global gaming market, it feels nice to sit down and play a game with my friends that's fun to play without worrying about when the Japanese or Brazilians are going to show up and initiate rage mode. I am super excited for things like the new Rainbow Six or the Division.

Having said all that, I agree with a lot of the sentiment here. The loot crates are boring compared to Borderlands. There's a bit of a Christmas feel when you find a loot chest on Borderlands, especially a well hidden one. It's definitely more boring on Destiny. I would love to see more drastic armor changes like you get with Skyrim so that you don't look like every other Titan, Hunter or Warlock out there. Also, I killed a couple level 11 enemies last night with my super-charged ability and got jack crap for it...which sucked. You grind through some over-leveled characters in Borderlands and you are usually rewarded handsomely for it.

But I am definitely finding that playing with friends is pretty freakin' fun! I played with Kamakazi, Stewie, GURU and Mechatool last night. We burned through a couple levels and then conquered the Dragon's Lair...which was a giant pain in the ass and super difficult! But we had a lot of good laughs and really enjoyed the time. The two community events that we participated in was super fun last night, but again...the reward wasn't very good for participating in the event. We should have gotten something special for jumping in and working as a community!

I think I will probably buy this one because there is really nothing else out there that is super interesting to me and even if I wanted to go back to Titanfall, I feel like I will find nobody online to play with except super duper try-hards who are up to prestige 10...or whatever they call it.

I have run into them and several others exploring they are just higher level, they are too high of a level for you to be able to do any damage to. I agree with the opinions about the issues with the beta and the repetition but, it's a beta. They definitely have not put all of the variety that will be in the full game into the beta. I would assume their main goal of the beta is to try to stress test the system and see how a few of the environments, events and missions run with multiple players running around at the same time. I'm not going to knock them because of the repetition I see in a beta, it's about what i would expect.

In general it has been running pretty smooth and looks pretty good. The graphics are pretty clean, I have seen very little lag issues, I hit where I am aiming I haven't experienced any of the net code type of issues I have in BF4. no enemies shooting me while I am behind cover etc..

I have seen a few flakey things like the water being overly mirror like, my shadow looking like it is running ahead of me when i pass a light or in a few cases, a player being invisible with just their name floating in space. The AI isn't very impressive but, I expect some of the higher level MOBS will be a bit tougher and smarter. I definitely do hope that they do something about the MP, the balancing is way out of wack. All in all I am pretty impressed, I have pre-ordered and am looking forward to playing the full version.

One thing that's weird is how there isn't an option to join a friend in game. For instance, while in orbit it says I have 1 friend on a certain mission, but no option to join them. I have to back out and go to the friends tab via the X1 dash and select "join game" (instead of, say, clicking to join the server your friends are on in BF4). Not a huge deal, but it's odd.

Graphics and the backdrops are very nice, but then again I've not much to compare it with in regard to sci-fi games.
Took me a while to navigate around the menus, and I nearly spat my beer out when Spike suddenly appeared and proceeded to do the funky chicken in front of me!

I agree with previous comments that the AI is as predictable as games twenty years old. I think my own freaky shadow and multiple footsteps made me jump more than the lizard men.

On the fence as to whether this is a buy for me yet. Maybe more games with MPs will convince me. It sucks that you can't join friends on higher ranking maps.

"Saturday, July 26. 2:00 PM PDT. Mark your calendars. We’re going to the Moon.

That’s where Bungie is sending players on the final day of the Destiny (http://mp1st.com/category/mp-games/destiny/) Beta in special mission only available for a limited time. The goal is to amass as many gamers as possible across the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 to play the Destiny Beta at the same time in an effort to stress test Destiny’s online infrastructure.

Players who do decide to log in during the two-hour public event won’t leave empty handed. Participants will go home with a special nameplate for use in the final game when it ships September 9.

“This is a flash mob. Set your destination. The Iron Banner will be live. The Director will still beckon with the lures we’ve littered all across Old Russia,” writes community manager DeeJ in the latest Bungie Weekly Update (http://www.bungie.net/en/News/News?aid=11963).

“We’re even sending you on a new story mission. For this one, you’ll be glad you scrounged that jump drive from the wastes of the Cosmodrome. You don’t need us to tell you where you’re headed. We’ve marked it on the map since the moment when the Beta Build became a secret whispered about by only our friends and family. This new destination will be open to you for two hours.”
If you’re not quite sure what DeeJ is talking about, here’s the location found on Earth’s Moon that has been viewable but inaccessible since the Beta’s launch:

As for when the Beta ends, here’s what DeeJ had to say: “The Wolf, our Theoretical Physicist, has told me that he wants some room to maneuver close to the conclusion of our little social experiment. So, I’m not telling you exactly when. Please play until we nail this thing shut.”

Remember, the beta is now open to all PlayStation and Xbox gamers (http://mp1st.com/2014/07/24/destiny-beta-now-open-players-xbox-playstation-code-needed/) with either a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription, respectively. Good games yesterday with Major Stains in the early evening, and then with Lore later, where we cleared the last mission.

Things I liked are the simplicity of joining friends, epic boss battles, the super-smooth mechanics, very pretty graphics, the very solid hit detection and not getting killed behind cover, and standard control mapping ( Lore had the line of the night when he said, "Yeah - I hate when you go to melee a guy and end up giving him a blowjob.").

Things I didn't like were the typical over-blown and impossible to follow/care about sci fi story line, the ridiculous imbalance in PvP, predictable AI, and (probably) too many weapon/armor upgrades that you never even use. (Why -after playing maybe 3 hrs total - do I have 6 different pairs of gloves to choose from? Can I just drop the 5 off at the lunar goodwill or something?).

No fatal flaws on that list, so I'm calling it a buy for me.

Got into the Iron Banner for a few rounds last night. Same "Domination" style gameplay, saw one new map, and supposedly no "Balancing" of levels and gear. Of course there were only a bunch of level 8s in there.

Got connection errors the first few times I tried to get in, then sat and waited forever watching the x/12 fill up. It was like that between every match, if even 2 people left after a match, it'd be a 2-3 minute wait for the teams to fill back up. So, in an hour I managed to play 4 rounds. Other than that I actually had a pretty good time with it. Might have just been that my titan has some decent gear. I definitely ran into 1 or 2 guys who were just impossible to take down, and I had good matches and bad matches, but actually felt like the rounds that I sucked it was me sucking, not the game arbitrarily deciding how much damage I gave or took. I finished near the top of my team most of the time, got some bounties finished, even had more than 20 kills in a match, rather than the normal PvP where I was always managing around 10 at best and looking at guys with 30+ on the boards.

Definitely worth checking out if you get the chance. Aside from the terrible wait between the rather short matches, I found it a lot better experience than previous. Could definitely see myself continuing to jump in for a few matches here and there.

So is everyone going to try and get in on this massive public event at 2 today? I'm guessing it'll be hard to connect, and probably break their servers, but will give it a shot anyway.

Disassemling is sort of like selling them, you get small amounts of glimmer, nice to be able to do that straight from inventory rather than visiting a vendor like every other thing in the game. The stash is nearly useless, since armor is class specific, and with what 9 or 12 inventory spaces on each armor piece or primary, secondary, heavy weapon, we pretty much have more inventory space than the 20 weapons or 20 amor pieces of stash space.

Considering it was a beta, I had a lot of fun tonight.
Turned it on at 9 and just switched off at 1:30.
Good games with Spike, Banksie, and Lore. Although I think Spike does have an unhealthy obsession with teabags! And I agree there should have been less gravity on the moon.
I surprised myself and really enjoyed the last few games on my own, the level 5 story 'The Last Array' on hard setting really got my palms sweaty. It was a satisfying ending.

Still not sure it's a buy for me yet, although I would like to see Jupiter, Mercury etc.

Glad I got to try it out.

I wish they would have given us the chance to create new weapons or armor from all of the materials I have amassed. I wound up disassembling most things right after I got them once I figured out if it was worth replacing my existing piece. One of the biggest omissions in the game so far (unless I just missed it) is the ability to quickly compare things. If you gather a bunch of weapons on a mission, it takes forever to go through and compare stats of each weapon!

I'm never buying this game - the moon gravity being the same as earth is totally LOL!!!!! :ar15:

Yeah - good games last night. I just couldn't help but teabag those scumbag alien corpses!!

I really liked the moon mission and the chance to drive one of those dolphin things - they were totally badass. Hope they get some more vehicles into the final game.

The gravity is different, you're just wearing Link's Iron Boots!

I totally cannot wait for this. I love Sci-Fi and it has a more darker/serious feel than the Borderlands games....which I will also be snatching up the Pre-Sequel when it comes out.

So I just put my preorder in. Pretty excited to play through this experience. I really enjoyed the beta, so this should be even better! Hope to get a chance to do fire teams with a bunch of you dudes in Sept!

I remember reading somewhere the other day that the level cap was 20. With the speed I reached level 8 (the beta cap) that is a bit unnerving (if true). Of course, I can't remember where I read this.

Anyone else see it?

Okay. Just disproved that.

Unlike a bunch of the other activities in Destiny, where you begin the activity – like let's say you pick the level-22 Strike playlist – everything in that activity is going to be level 22. It's going to be consistent. If you're level 26, you're going to have some relationship to it. You're going to be more powerful than that activity. In a raid, when the raid begins at level 25, it's not where it ends. Like part of going the raid is the journey of gearing up; building your arsenal to react to the situations that it's going to ask you to go through.

Beards coming to Destiny? (http://kotaku.com/destiny-really-needs-beards-1627845173/all)

As mostly adult mostly males around here, I think we can mostly agree how important this is.

Windmill now pumps approximately 14% less liters of waters per match from 3.5L to 3L

Glad they fixed that, the pump rate was throwing everything out of balance :p

Seriously though, a lot of changes. Might have to rethink my class and weapon leanings.

Apparently it doesn't take long to hit the soft level cap of 20 (where apparently your stats are maxed out, but you can still level up further to fight higher level enemies) as people have already done it. Don't know much about it, but apparently there is "end-game" content that is supposed to keep things going at that point. Still, seems a little too quick to max stats and makes me think there will be DLC to increase this cap.

Yeah, I easily hit the beta cap of 10 twice and was a bit concerned about this. I read more about "life after lvl 20" yesterday, will post the link if I can dig it up. Sounds like there's somewhat of another leveling system in play. "Light Levels" or something that has to do with your weapon stats or skill levels or something? I know there is end-game content that doesn't unlock until "level 25" so somehow we'll keep increasing.

This (http://www.wired.com/2014/09/destiny/) piece by Chris Kohler made me chuckle as I drew many similarities to his experience.
Mainly the fact that you grind through a tough level on your own, to face an even tougher boss. Only for the kids to need you or some other family based issue.
Not to mention the fact that I'll need to buy some 'man diapers' for the long weekend sessions, as too many beers and a lack of a pause function can push my bladder to level cap!

Bungie’s Destiny is a wild, enticing new frontier, but it is no country for old men.

Released earlier this week amidst what is arguably the most buildup and fanfare to ever accompany a videogame release, Destiny is the next step from the creators of Halo. Whereas Bungie’s previous games (and indeed, most console shooters) were neatly partitioned into segments you played offline and online, Destiny is always online. As you pursue the game’s story missions, you’re playing in a world populated with others, and you’ll see other players running around and killing the same enemies you are.

Given Bungie’s history, you will not be surprised to hear Destiny‘s shooting mechanics are exceptionally well-polished. This is about as much fun as shooting a fake gun gets. The graphics can be beautiful, especially when Destiny‘s pathways lead you to some breathtaking vista on the moon that looks like something George Lucas would have dropped into a special edition of Star Wars. The music, by ousted Halo composer Marty O’Donnell, is gorgeous, and it’s used in an exacting way to heighten the tension.

All these things are great. Yet I don’t know how much more Destiny I can play.

As I discussed in my thoughts on Destiny‘s alpha test version, even though it has wide-open plains that beg to be wandered and explored, Destiny doesn’t seem to want me to Go Explorin’; there’s not much to find out there besides death. No, if you’re not on a linear story mission you’re supposed to be finding a mini-mission, a small number of clearly marked points on the map in close proximity to you. There also are “bounties,” which are not bad guys you must track down and arrest, but challenges that span hours of gameplay: Kill 100 enemies with headshots, for instance, or earn 9,000 experience points without dying.

There are first-person shooters and there are first-person shooters. That is to say: There are games in which you see through the eyes of a character and your primary input is firing a weapon, but within those games you might be tasked with all sorts of different activities (BioShock, for instance). And there are shooters that are pure, stripped-down exercises in target shooting, an unbroken series of increasingly taxing iterations exploring the art and craft of putting bullets into heads.

Halo and Destiny fall squarely into that category. Shooting is the game. Oh, there are missions that seem at first to require a more nuanced take on the art of interplanetary warfare, but these are (in my experience) of two types: “Run to a place and press the square button once” and “Run to a place and don’t press anything.”

Still, the role-playing aspects grafted on to the base gameplay give it an addictive appeal that the shooting itself might not. Shoot, kill, take loot, upgrade your gear, level up, repeat. Bungie has nailed that perfect Skinner box where the rewards come just enough to keep you on the hook for the next one.

You can choose to play Destiny‘s story missions with a small group of friends—and indeed there are some missions that require cooperation—but I decided to go it alone. Although I could see other players running around as I completed missions, I wasn’t really sure why it was so important that we all be in the same place instead of alone on our own game discs. We didn’t really interact. Sometimes someone would kill an enemy I was killing. Such moments are nice. But what does it matter, to me, that it was a human and not a friendly line of code?

Still, the fact all games of Destiny took place on a persistent online server has had one dramatic consequence: You cannot pause. Ever. How could you? And if you’re like me you may not realize how much you miss this feature until you realize you don’t have it.

All of this added up, the other night, to what was perhaps an inevitable conclusion.

I’d plowed through a story scenario that had lasted maybe half an hour. There was one final room. I knew this was the end because so far almost every mission had ended the same way: You find whatever MacGuffin you’d been tracking down, go up to it and press Square, and then your “Ghost,” a floating orb played by Peter Dinklage, tells you it’s going to take some time to do whatever a floating orb played by Peter Dinklage does, so while you’re waiting could you please fight off several more waves of increasingly powerful enemies while trapped in this room?

The difficulty level on Destiny had definitely been ratcheting up considerably as I played; even though I was a full two dings ahead of the recommended level for this scenario I was still eating it regularly. I died twice in rapid succession, respawning outside the room, the enemies alive again. But Destiny didn’t give me back any ammo when I respawned. So now I was at even more of a disadvantage because I had used up my rocket launcher and sniper rifle and had to kill everything with my weaker, primary weapon.

The third time around, even with less ammo in my pocket, I was really making a run at it. I’d somehow narrowly avoided death a couple of times.

The doorbell rang. Dinner.

Now I am yelling for my wife, who is in the other room in a meeting with a headset on. My yelling is becoming increasingly loud and frantic. I am shooting and yelling. I do not want the food man to leave. My wife hears me and gets the door. I again barely make it through this last, intense wave of unceasing foes. Suddenly a giant boss monster rears his purple glowing head. I cannot pause and clear my mind, catch my breath. I am doing a fairly decent job of avoiding his blasts and hitting his weak spot. But I’m too agitated, he’s too fast, the damage is too swift: He catches me out and I die.

And I respawn: Not at one of the many, many possible checkpoints in between the opening of the door and the final confrontation, but all the way back at the damned door, with no freaking ammo.

I stand, throwing my arms in the air. “Who is this for? Whose life does this fit into?” I ask. I am, at this moment, incredulous. We are about to have a baby; I cannot even answer the door. The combination of this blink-and-you’re-vaporized difficulty and an inability to pause the action, it seems to me, restricts Destiny‘s audience to people who can afford to shut off the world for vast stretches at a time. This is not a game that wants to fill the odd hours in my life, it demands all of it.

“The game is always afoot,” a representative for Bungie said. “Can’t pause Destiny. Can’t pause Twitter. Can’t pause life.”

Yeah, see, there’s the problem. What if Destiny is successful to the point that this is what big triple-A console games become? Does that just cut me out entirely? You can’t pause life, but this ain’t life. There’s a reason we call this place Game|Life, with the big line down the middle. Destiny, for all its appeal, crept over that line a little too far for me.
