Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Explodes onto PSN April 30th
+ Posted by Philippe Fournier (http://blog.us.playstation.com/author/pfournier/) // Production Manager, Ubisoft

Hey guys Iím Philippe Fournier, production manager on the upcoming cyber-shooter Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/far-cry-3-blood-dragon/). It is 2007 ó the future. Step into the shoes of Rex Power Colt, a cyber-commando sent to a remote island to stop Colonel Ike Sloan from taking over the world with his rogue cyborg army.
For Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, we wanted to go back to the late 80s and early 90s ó what we like to call ďthe VHS eraĒ ó when video games were still new, and over-the-top action movies were at their pinnacle. Most of the team grew up during those years, so it was a ton of fun to relive this carefree episode of our lives, where we could watch cartoons like MASK or GI Joe with Uncle Dan on Saturday morning.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8253/8638262817_687d0e7db2_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/8638262817/)
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8257/8638262783_b1a2796050_n.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/8638262783/)http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8126/8638262843_c9220ac14e_n.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/8638262843/)
During the conception phase, our days consisted of watching VHS tapes of action movies sitting in front of an old CRT screen. Our office space looked like a kidís room in the early 90s, with He-Man figurines on our desks and Terminator posters on every wall. We probably had the best Halloween day ever, with people dressed up as Robocop and our very own Omega Force cyborg soldiers.
All of this helped us create a game filled with explosions, cyborgs and cheesy one-liners delivered by the greatest Hollywood action hero from the 80s, the one and only Michael Biehn. The script is terrible. So terrible, that itís actually good. Our universe sometimes doesnít make sense, and thatís perfectly fine ó not everything made sense during those years.

Fans of open world games, laser-tag, neon pink and dragons that shoot lasers from their eyes will absolutely cyber-love Blood Dragon. Itís based on the same award-winning technology and gameplay systems from Far Cry 3 (http://us.playstation.com/games/far-cry-3-ps3.html?CMP=soc_us__gm_farcry3_blooddragon_04_11_ 13), so when youíre laying waste to cyborgs in the open world, expect a lot of explosive and random encounters filled with cyber sharks, robo dogs and mutant goats. The game is a standalone offer, which means that any fans of the 80s will be able to jump in on April 30th on PSN (http://blog.us.playstation.com/category/psn/).

Excited for this. FC3 was over too soon.

Anyone hear anything on pricing? They said its stand alone and not DLC. I'm guessing it'll be like $20-$30.

Iím already sold on picking up Blood Dragon so I refuse to watch anymore videos. I donít want it to be like a Hangover movie where you see all the best parts in trailers. This will be added to my collection on the 30th.

Mini review after the first mission:

Pretty much Far Cry 3 but more awesomer in its own hilarious way.

Love the weapon descriptions in the data console:

FAZERTRON

You'd think that right out of the box, something called the Fazertron would fire something cool, like laser beams or Honey Badgers, but no. This assault rifle shoots plain old bullets until you upgrade it to shoot beams. Now you're thinking: "Fuck. I want it to fire Honey Badgers that have had their nuts flicked with a wet towel. Why'd you screw with my expectations like that?" Because.

I'm trying not to buy any more games. I need to finish the ones I have. But, DAMN, the hype that ol' Max gives it .... makes me want to pick it up. He makes it sound so ridiculously absurd and hilariously funny AND .... wait for it ......... AWESOME!!!

Maybe PS+ will put it on sale or on their freebie list some day.

Some more from my play last night:

Took down my first outpost (besides the opening scene one - which is partially scripted)- stealthy-style like JK does it. :). They are a little bigger than the FC3 outposts, so a little more involved.

Couple of interesting things different from FC3:

- Because of your awesome Steve-Austin-like bionics, you can't take damage jumping from tall things, so go ahead and just jump off stuff whatever.

- Also like the 6 million dollar man, you run faster than you do in FC3. Supposedly I guess the baddies - who are also part cyborg - also run faster, but they didn't seem to chase me last night after I ran across some in the open world.

- All the weapon upgrades must be purchased after they are unlocked, but it doesn't seem like getting money is an issue. Skill upgrades happen automatically - no skill tree management/choices.

- You start the game already having most (if not all) of the melee skills in place including body dragging, chained kill, and double melee from above. Smart idea by the designers cause experienced FC3 players would hate not having that I would think.

Bad parts: the cut scenes are meant to be cartoonish and have an 80's video game vibe, but I just found them boring and not as funny as other parts of the game. Also, game does not have any MP or Co-op, and the world is basically much smaller than the original FC3 but to be fair it's only $15 so expectations should be low.

Verdict: if you liked FC3 you will love this very unique extension. For me, it's the best $15 gaming expense I've made since BFBC2:Vietnam.

I think I'll hold off on this one. It does look AWESOME, and Max and some of you guys are praising it. But, I will either wait until they give a little discount or I finish enough of my other games to warrant a new purchase.

I've never played any FC games, so hadn't paid this one much attention, thinking it was just FC3 DLC, but was on the ps store yesterday and the graphic for it made me curious.

The wife plays a bit of FC2 sometimes, so she decided to DL the demo. Watched her play it and was cracking up at the dialogue. Pure entertainment!

I only played about 30 minutes and I love it. So many Predator References I was dying. The song from the chopper. One of the missions is "Do you have time to duck?" I laughed my ass off the entire time. The tutorial was hysterical. Mark IV style mother fucker. It is so cliche that it is awesome. This game definitely had us 30+ y/o gamers in mind. Even my wife thought the tracking bar was funny. This is the best $15 dollars I've spent on DLC since BFBC2 Vietnam.

Got a bit of time in last night. I honestly don't know what I was expecting. I guess I was thinking just a basic shooter, like Doom or something. But this is Far Cry 3 with different skins. And it's fucking awesome!

As said before, the references, humor, and graphics are what makes it fun. They stripped down all the "managment" parts of FC3. You no longer have to make syringes, pick new skills while leveling up, etc. You still level up and get new skills but it's all automatic. Nothing to come in between you and kicking ass, which I can appreciate. The game hints during the loading screens are hilarious (Grenades explode; If you are low on health, stop getting shot).

It also seems like a pretty big island to explore. I'm very happy with my $15 purchase! If you liked FC3 it's a must buy. If you like FPS and grew up in the 80's it's a must buy.

"Bows are for playing violins. Unless they shoot arrows and have neon on them, like these do, which makes them awesome."

"Mines were probably invented by someone who had a foot phobia - which is kinda like a foot fetish but you think legs should end at the knees."

(Or something to that effect)

OK - will stop posting these cause I don't wanna ruin it. Just make sure you read everything in the data center. So great.

Anyone know how to take down the heavies?

I was doing a hostage rescue mission last night and the hostage was inside the cave guarded by 3 guys, and then there were 2 regulars and a heavy guarding the cave entrance. I was able to take out the Regulars outside the cave no problem, but I tried like 4 times to melee the heavy but I guess that is a later unlock, so the only way I could get him was by throwing C400 on his ass and then running into the cave and killing the three inside before they totally killed the hostage. Also tried an arrow to the back of the head, but that didn't seem to work either unless my aim was a little off.

Took me a bunch of tries and seems like there should be an easier way.

Didn't try taking down the shield and attracting a blood dragon to eat them all - guess that could be another way but I didn't see where the shield de-activation switch was so never tried it.

Game is boss.

Think I know which one you're talking about. For that one I snuck to the hill above the cave entrance, killed the heavy and other 2 with a greande, then dashed in the cave and killed the rest before they could react.

I've killed a heavy with one shot with the sniper rifle (back of the head I think). But then another time it knocked his helmet off, like you said. If it's a flamer you can shoot the fuel pack.

Kinda hard to do completely stealth until you get the heavy takedown.

Finished last night. Couldn't ask for a more awesome finish - lol. First time I ever remember laughing my ass off at a game's finish.

Even took the time to get all the trophies - first time I've ever done that. Thought I might get my first platinum, then read this morning that the game doesn't have one -lol.

Getting to 25 dragon kills was getting kind of annoying due to lack of dragons, but then I found that if you just save and go back out to the main menu and re-load there will always be one or two around the base that you spawn in on.

That arm-mounted laser shooter thing is totally badass.

After burning through Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (http://www.destructoid.com/review-far-cry-3-blood-dragon-251865.phtml), there's only so much left to do in the game before you never touch the thing again despite how ridiculously fun it is to hunt down critters with a neon bow. That was especially true of the garrisons which, once captured, basically just sat there.
Ubisoft has since patched in an option on all platforms to reset the garrisons, meaning you can go back in with all of you upgraded weapons. This is a very good thing indeed. According to the company, the patch was made based on the success of the outpost reset patch (http://www.destructoid.com/far-cry-3-gets-new-difficulty-mode-and-outpost-respawns-245799.phtml) for Far Cry 3. Next time, maybe just include these options from the beginning? We'd appreciate that.

My patience paid off. I picked this up for $3.75 (PS+ sale/discount). I played and finished the entire game yesterday in a 12 hour marathon session.

If anyone didn't get this game, I highly recommend it. It is PURE OVER THE TOP, AWESOMENESS. :becky:

I have a few collectibles to get. It shouldn't take too long, because they show up on your map.

If you want 100% trophies ... and these are easy trophies. Make sure you get headshots on all types of enemies. Pay particular attention to Elite enemies ... when they have an icon over their head, it will be yellow instead of white. They also, usually have a yellow outfit or a yellow aura around them.

Finally got 100%. I tried to get my headshot trophy by resetting the garrisons and clearing them again. It didn't work. I had to start a new game and play pretty much the entire game over, making sure I headshot every type of enemy. I finally got the trophy while playing the Zombie arenas.

WOOT!!
