News & rumors seem to be popping up more and more since Comic-con. The latest is saying that Disney/LucasFilm are going after both Ryan Gosling & Zach Efron with Gosling to possibly play the son of Luke (guessing Ben Skywalker if they are using the expanded universe for characters) and Efron as the son of Han & Leia (Jacen Solo).

#1. Oh hell no on Efron.
#2. Gosling I don't mind much.

I'm not really mad about casting, just the possible story. As much as I am a long time Star Wars fanboy (and very proud to be a fanboy in this case) and the thought of other actors in the roles of Luke, Han, Leia and company is not a good one, it has to happen. The reality is that from the release of Return of the Jedi through 1990, SW was a dead franchise. Nothing was happening with only urban legend floating around about the possibility of a new movie coming out some day. But then on May 1st 1991 "Heir to the Empire" was released, authored by Timothy Zahn. It was volume in a new trilogy that would take place 5 years after the events of ROTJ.

Han & Leia are married with twins on the way. Luke now a full Jedi Knight is looking for answers about what he is to do next and looking for guidance. The trilogy is amazing and quite honestly is better then the original three movies. When I heard that they were going to be making more movies and that J.J. Abrams was directing I was really hoping that the HTTE books would be the basis of those movies. I even looked to what 3 actors I would put in those rolls as they would still have to be young enough to live in those rolls for some time. They needed to be well known enough to interest those outside of SW fans. And of course had to be pretty good actors. Here are my 3:

Luke Skywalker

Stephen Amell

Timothy Zahn is by far the best Star Wars EU Author. I actually met him at a book signing in Philly. The Thrawn Triology are my favorite novels and I've read over 30 SW Novels. I stopped during the Fate of the Jedi Series because I didn't like the direction they we going. I am not excited for the new movies at all. JJ Abrahams does nothing conventionally. He is going to try and get too cute with the story. Lucasfilm doesn't give a crap about the EU. Look at how the Clone Wars cartoon took a big dump on it. Peaceful Mandalorians. FU you Filoni. I doubt Disney cares either. Star Wars is a cash cow. Like COD they can put out a piece of crap and people will buy it.

If Ben Skywalker is going to be in it then the movies can't be about the Thrawn Trilogy. It was in those novels that Luke met Mara Jade. Ben Skywalker was born during the Yuuzhan Vong war.

As a true SW Fanatic with an OCD Complex about continuity and canon, the new movies will be a complete nightmare for me.

I really hope they are not going to just jump into the Legacy of the Force timeline, it would just not make sense.

I'm guessing it will be a completely new story that shits on the expanded universe. Missing out on the Thrawn trilogy is such a huge misstep to me. I have read and own essentially every SW book ever released. It's an absolute treasure chest of source material for making a new series of films. If done right the Thrawn trilogy would pretty much destroy any film series out their. Disney has done right by the Marvel universe so far, I really wish they would do the same for the SW universe too.

I agree that the Thrawn Trilogy would be the best. With characters like Pelleon, Thrawn, Talon Karade, and Mara Jade it is a gold mine. The only thing that works with the New Jedi Order Time line is that the current age of the original actors would fit.

Visually I guess it will be in safe hands with JJ at the helm.
Character and plot wise, who knows?

Let's get the rumour mill turning...Gary Oldman...Go!

I've got to say that the first thing I think of when I see that poster is Star Trek and the inevitable destruction of some big space ship or other by chopping bits of it off.

No, just no! Star Wars spaceships blow up or crash into nearby Death Stars, they don't fall apart like the one shown.

(this post is slightly tongue in cheek by the way.)

And finally, after much Internet speculation, scorn, and insanity, Lucasfilm has seen fit to reveal the cast of J.J. Abrams (http://www.ign.com/stars/j-j-abrams)' Star Wars: Episode VII (http://www.ign.com/movies/star-wars-episodes-vii).
Here's the full statement (http://starwars.com/news/star-wars-episode-7-cast-announced.html) from the company:
The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.
Actors John Boyega (http://www.ign.com/stars/john-boyega), Daisy Ridley (http://www.ign.com/stars/daisy-ridley), Adam Driver (http://www.ign.com/stars/adam-driver), Oscar Isaac (http://www.ign.com/stars/oscar-isaac), Andy Serkis (http://www.ign.com/stars/andy-serkis), Domhnall Gleeson (http://www.ign.com/stars/domhnall-gleeson), and Max von Sydow (http://www.ign.com/stars/max-von-sydow) will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford (http://www.ign.com/stars/harrison-ford), Carrie Fisher (http://www.ign.com/stars/carriefisher), Mark Hamill (http://www.ign.com/stars/mark-hamill), Anthony Daniels (http://www.ign.com/stars/anthony-daniels), Peter Mayhew (http://www.ign.com/stars/peter-mayhew), and Kenny Baker in the new film.

http://oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/stg.ign.com/2014/04/star-wars-episode-7-cast-announce-610x346.jpg

Director J.J. Abrams says, "We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."
Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan (http://www.ign.com/stars/lawrence-kasdan) and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy (http://www.ign.com/stars/kathleen-kennedy), J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk (http://www.ign.com/stars/bryan-burk) are producing, and John Williams (http://www.ign.com/stars/john-williams) returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

So there are some surprises there and some expected names. The great mo-cap master Andy Serkis and the just plain old great Max von Sydow seemed to come from out of nowhere, while the original cast and Adam Driver were pretty much a shoe-in.
All in all, awesome. But what do you guys think?

I heard that the JJ in JJ Abrams stand for Jar Jar. I have no faith in him especially now that the entire EU is considered non-canon. It all makes me less excited about Battlefront as well. (That and Dice is the developer.)

First Trilogy absolutely ROCKED!!! Taught me that evil can win (Thank you Empire Strikes Back) and that all movies don't have to be happy endings.

First Trilogy (version 2, remastered and new CGI introduced) kind of ruined it for me. I love the look and feel of the originals, all the new CGI made the movie look fake. Which, of course, is weird as the costumes back then were so bad, but at least they were believable.

Second Trilogy really pissed me off. 1st episode had Jar Jar and young Anakin, enough said. The final fight scene was pretty good, but I don't think it rescued the movie. 2nd episode was by far the best of the new trilogy, acting was better and more of the world was introduced. The third movie really killed me with the "LOVE" stuff. You don't need a whole love story to have us understand that people like each other (i.e. Han and Leia's love/hate relationship). I don't believe the writers believe we were smart enough to get the underlined story, IMO. The final fight was great and the introduction of Vader was awesome.

http://nooooooooooooooo.com/vader.jpg

Third Trilogy: I have hope that JJ Abrams will do well with it. They have to keep it true to the series. I'm in no way a Star Wars know-it-all nor claim to be, but I am a big BIG fan of it. I have no idea what Thrawn Trilogy is, but I do know that the books were supposed to be kick ass. If they can stick to the stories and the true message of Star Wars, then it should be good.

I'm in the minority, I liked the prequels (Clones and Revenge anyway).

I firmly stick with the Machete order for watching Star Wars, makes them work as an overall story so much better.

Viewing order:

Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Attack of The Clones
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi

No need to for Phantom. Everything you need to know in Phantom that is relative the overall story is quickly recapped in AotC anyway.

Seriously, go get the books and read them. They set the perfect tone and match the original trilogy note for note. I swear you will hear John Williams score while reading the books.

This makes sense. lol

I always wondered why Obi Wan never changed Luke's last name. That would have made too much sense.

Obi Wan did hide Luke on Tattooine because it held too many bad memories for Anakin so he would never go back there. That made sense, but keeping the Skywalker name made no sense.

(Click above for original article - extract below)

Racking up more than a million views in the first day of its release, TIE Fighter is all at once a callback to the 1994 Lucasfilm game of the same name, an homage to ’80s Japanese animation, an ode to the Empire, and a kick-ass 7 1/2 minutes.

My favorite part is Johnson’s disclaimer on the film’s YouTube page: “Don’t support me on Patreon, because I don’t have one! And don’t donate to my Kickstarter, because I don’t have one of those either. Instead, if you enjoyed this, give someone at your workplace, uni, school or whatever a random bar of chocolate or can or Coke or something. Seriously, it’ll probably make their day. That would totally make my day.”

Had to share.

These paintings by Craig Davison really caught my eye.

They seem to conjure up the magic of growing up as a Star Wars obsessed kid in the 70's/ 80's. Just the fact that we seemed to find whatever we could scrounge up from your Parents shed/ garage, and with a bit of imagination manage to invent our own worlds full of adventure.

The artist really captures the spirit of the time, and explores other colourful characters from my youth such as Batman, Clint Eastwood and more.

I was talking to someone who has a minor involvement with the storyline for all three movies, and he said they are having to change the timings of the events in the story because it wasn't quite gelling in parts 2 & 3 (or should I say 8 & 9).

Saw FA at the Imax 3D with sons (the girls of the house not interested). After a pile of previews for superhero movies none of us have the slightest interest in, we settled in for a very enjoyable movie. I've heard it criticized as fan-servicing nostalgia and video-game action, but I didn't really get that and I've seen 'em all at their original release dates. I suppose the only minor complaint was the tendency to beat a "look at our strong female character who is strong because strong female character!" message into our heads every ten minutes. But still a promising fresh start.

I'm so glad I gave up my prime seat facing the middle of the screen so that my wife could sit there. It happened to be next to my youngest and he had to go to the loo twice during the film ... TWICE! Even though I made him go before the film. I'd have force choked him after the first time :mad2:

I wasnt sure about it going in, as I am one of those that loves the OT but am really not a fan of the PT. I watch them and do enjoy them simply because there star wars (so, a love/hate I guess?).

but the new movie turned out great for the most part. I can nit-pick it, and I don't quite rank it with the OT (yet). but its Parsecs above the Prequels.

taking my kids to see it tonight at the drive-in (3 and 4 year old girls that LOVE star wars too). there playing it back to back on the same screen and we plan to stay for both. and tomorrow I go again with my cousin and friend to see it at the MOSI Imax dome in Tampa.

I haven't seen the OT in theaters since I was a kid ( I believe it was 97 when they did the special changes, or around 99 getting ready for the new movie, making me 8 or 10 respectively). so I'm quite jealous of anyone that can actually remember seeing them as my memory is quite vague... and more so, the unaltered versions (that's all I watch at home).

seeing it at the IMAX Dome was Awesome! other Imax theaters around here dont comare. this was true IMAX. reading the opening crawl actually involved turning my head from left to right.. and we were not at the front. I want to see it in 3D at least one more time while its still in theaters. maybe after the holidays are over.

I've just finished the 3 season Spartacus and now sitting here asking myself if it's really over.....thoroughly enjoyed it. Blood, gore and nakedness, what more can I ask for.

Nope, it's a spin-off from the main series. It takes place before Episode 4 (A New Hope 1977).

Can't wait. Looks great, and good to see the old style stormtroopers. Would be good if this was a precursor to a series of Rogue Squadron films!

History of the Death Star (in a Minute)

The Death Star was the ultimate expression of evil in Star Wars. And this is how it was created! Here’s what you need to know about the Empire’s Ultimate Weapon.

I've got my IMAX booking ready - hope the film is as good as the YouTube.

Here's how much the Death Star would cost to run

Revealed: the true cost of powering the Death Star
Dear Mr Vader, your energy bill’s arrived...and it’s really quite something. In fact, you might want to take a deep (hoarse) breath about now.

Total Cost Per Day
£6,254,254,800,000,000,000,000,000,000

Brilliant!

It would cost even more if my family lived on it as they seem to be incapable of turning off the bloody lights...damn nerf herders.

I would make the argument that the mathematical calculations are set using our current understanding of energy sources. Considering that a crystal that is place inside of a mechanical element can produce enough energy for a man to melt open a blast door (aka Light Sabers) exist in this alternate reality leads me to believe we are fooling ourselves by using our real world sources. I mean I look at Aniken and his pod racer, a poor moisture farmer couldn't afford to power that thing if we are talking real world technology, in our world 0-100 in 1 second flat costs millions of dollars to achieve.

So I say it is statistically unlikely that we could even comprehend all of what is going on in the far reaches of the galaxy. I'd say something along the lines of successfully navigating an asteroid field 71,221 : 1 ... "Never tell me the odds"

So folks. Whats the verdict on Rogue One? (No spoilers obviously)

I went to see it last Thursday and had a bit of a slow start.
5 minutes after the trailers were due to start, a member of staff walked in and announced there was a powercut affecting that part of the city and everyone had to leave the building. Feeling deflated, my mate said lets go for a beer but not wanting to be beaten I said lets walk up to the other cinema on the off chance. And thankfully due to the cinemas spreading out the 'release day rush' by showing it on every screen on every showing, we got in.

Even with very tired eyes I managed to stay awake through what was a very enjoyable film.
Some critics said it was up there with 'Empire', which I thought was a crazy bold claim. But on reflection it could well be.
I will go and watch it again with my boys before I decide just how good it was. But it was good.

So many easter eggs for the fans, lots of action, and plenty of hamming it up from most of the cast.
Especially from K-2SO. I defy you to watch him and not think of Stewie Griffin from Family Guy crossed with Jim Parsons off the Big Bang Theory. It is uncanny.

But a superb addition to the space opera.

I definitely feel it's the best since EMPIRE. Really good imo

Slow start for sure. Like they were trying to introduce characters and keep them a secret from the audience all at once. After that, so good though.

And that Vader scenes...

Am I really the only one who thinks it was only OK?
I think the first act was too slow. Boring even. And the characters are not easy to relate to, requiring the audience to care for the mission itself, in order to get drawn by the movie. Which is usually worse than caring for the characters, being less personal.

That said, the story fits perfectly and makes perfect sense in the SW universe and timeline, and delivers great easter eggs and fan service. The very last scenes are priceless!

For all the celebrities that 2016 has laid claim to, one passing may of slipped by many a Star Wars fan.
Michael Leader, or the actor betting know as "That guy who hit his head in Star Wars", passed away earlier this year.
A screen blooper that has gone on to become folklore, even seeing Jango Fett pay homage to the gag in The Attack of the Clones.

I agree for the most part. The movie gives you no reason to care about the characters, which is why the first half of the movie (or more) did not engage me at all. I really enjoyed the fan service in the last act, but it felt like just that -- fan service -- with no logical reason why any of it should be happening.

The biggest example is Princess Leia's appearance. It was thrilling seeing her in a fanboy sort of way, and that is what ties Rogue One directly to Star Wars, but as someone who was at that time still claiming to be an ambassador for Alderaan and not an active member of the rebellion it would have been completely foolish for her to be at that battle. It makes no sense, and takes away any plausible deniability she may have had when captured at the beginning of SW. Plus according to Bail Organa she was supposed to be on her way to contact Kenobi, not fight in a major battle.

I also didn't like CGI Tarkin and Leia. Again, as a fanboy it was neat, but it was jarring. It was like someone dropped a video game cut scene into a movie.

I respect that they had the guts to kill off every major character -- very un-Disneylike -- and take some chances with the franchise. I just don't think all those chances paid off.

Am I admitting to being a complete nerd :nerd:, if I say that I nearly cried (first with joy then with regret) when

Darth Vader breaches the ship and takes out the rebels; then we see Princess Leia - for me this was the day after Carrie Fisher died

Guess I'll be booking a trip to Florida or California in 2019 then...

Disneyland to become wretched hive of scum and villainy
These might be the Star Wars-themed hotel and rides you are looking for

A new attraction called “Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge” will come to Disneyland Park in Anaheim and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando.

Both will feature two rides, on that “puts guests right in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance where guests will feel like they are inside a hangar bay on a Star Destroyer.” The offer will offer “the chance to fly the Millennium Falcon, where each guest is critical to the mission’s success.”

Better take out a personal loan or sell your first born Tonka.... Disney trips are getting ridiculously expensive. I dread the day when my wife and daughter convince me to book a trip. But, I think the Star Wars stuff will be enough to hook me into it.

I'll start saving now, that should cover my ticket. The rest of the family can sort themselves out.
