    Dunkirk

Off to watch Dunkirk on Sunday night, anyone else going?
It's been on my radar for a long while and the reviews are pretty stellar so far (not that they are anything to go by!). As haunting as the content can be in these movies, nothing moves me more than a good war flick.

For me Dunkirk was a must watch on the big screen. A visually stunning couple of hours with the dramtic score giving no let up to the drama and tension unfolding before you. It successfully recreates the horrors of war without the need for the incredibly realistic injuries/ deaths that we saw in Saving Private Ryan, whilst doing a superb job of showing the audience the predicament that the retreating forces found themselves in.

I ended up going to watch it with my 12 y/o son, his friend/ parents, as both boys have visited the beaches in France and movies made to this standard prove both a valuable education tool and a reminder to the sacrifices made during wartime.
They both enjoyed the movie, but being 12 y/o's they didn't really share many further thoughts and details.
My only gripe was the audio. The voice acting was very muffled and I'm not sure if it was in the edit or it was the actual theatre.

But for me a solid 9/10. And those Spitfire scenes, pure aviation porn.

Yep. Dunkirk is fantastic. I liked the Hans Zimmer score which proved you can have a synthesizer score in pre-synthesizer settings and still make it work well. I like the Elgar quote at the end.

My only quibbles were that Kenneth Branagh's character Spielberged too much (that is, most of his job was just to have a close up of his face reacting to stuff). The other thing was one of the shots of the Spitfire with the beach in the background. I suspect it looked fine for Imax, but on the non-imax screen I saw it looked cgi-fakey.

Definite must see and it looks like a runaway hit and maybe it will encourage more filmmakers to make films about real heroes instead of upteen silly super-hero movies.

P.S. While disturbing, it's not a gore-fest like Saving Private Ryan, proving that you don't have to be excessively graphic to get the same emotional impact.

I couldn't agree more. I was also sat there waiting for Big Ken to pull out a skull from under his jacket and burst into Hamlet. But all in all Nolan really nailed this one.

    Also on my radar:

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Although getting a cold reception at the box office (and I find Cara a wooden actor) this one looks interesting.
A must watch for me purely because of my love for so many of Mr Bessons previous works... The Big Blue, Leon, The Fifth Element, Lucy, Taken. All brilliant movies IMO.

    IT

Holy hell, that clown is back! I read nearly all of Stephen Kings books as a kid, and although they were infinitely more scarey in my head than on screen, they did make for some good films.
Finally this generation will realise why we all hate clowns so much!
